Friday 10th June

Friday 10th June 2016

Welcome back to Year 5F’s first blog for this final half term.

Maths – This week the children have been investigating different mental strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems.

For example, they looked at recognising and using near doubles…

125+126 so double 125 then add the extra 1 on

…rounding to the nearest 10 then adjusting your answer

38+69 so round both numbers to 40+70=110 then as you have added an extra 3 when you rounded up, take them back off 110-3=107

…and partitioning the numbers

134+125 so 100+100=200, 30+20=50 and 4+5=9 then recombine the number 200+50+9=259

Here are some photos of the children working…

Take a look at this online game and see if you can sharpen your mental maths addition and subtraction skills…

English – This week the children have been looking at poetry. The children have read a variety of different poems all about flowers. They have written a poem entitled Wigan In Bloom all about how beautiful our home town is. They have also written a selection of poems about flowers. Take a look at their fabulous work…

Also, this week the children have been working on laptops to complete both Maths and English assessments. They have concentrated really well and worked really hard.

French – This week the children have been learning all about the EUFA European Championship. They have been looking at the flags of all the nations involved. They have all made predictions about who they think will be the final eight teams, and out of those which two teams will be in the Final. Fingers crossed one of them might be lucky!

Topic – The children have begun to make their own Greek pots using gummed paper and balloons. They have been adding layers of gummed paper over their balloon to strengthen and make it hard. Next week they will be turning them into a vase and then adding their own Greek style design with paint. Take a look at them busy at work…

Our certificate this week was awarded to Keira for ALWAYS making the classroom a brighter place to be. frownfrownfrownfrownfrown

In addition, a massive well done to Jack on achieving his GOLD multiplication and division wristband. Also, a huge congratulations to both Megan and Stephanie on achieving their PLATINUM spelling badges. We are super proud of all three of them on their amazing achievements.

All that remains to say we hope you have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you again on Monday and…

Good luck to England, who play their first match on Saturday.
