Friday 12th December

Friday 12th December

Welcome back to the Year 5W blog. It has been yet another busy week with lots of interesting and exciting activities going on!

Maths -  This week, we have continued to look at division. We have been using the bus stop method (or as you may know it, the short division method.) We have moved on to dividing both whole and decimal numbers. Finally, today, we have looked at division word problems.

English - This week we have continued looking at letters. As we are all desperate to watch How to Train a Dragon, we need to convince Mrs Baker to allow us the opportunity. We have all written her a letter trying to persuade her to watch the DVD. Also, this week we have been taking at look at ways to help us with our spelling. We have all designed posters to help us remember the spelling of tricky words.

Topic - This week we have designed our own Viking shield. As well as that, we have written acrostic poems using appropriate vocabulary all about the Vikings. Later in the week, we watched a short film all about the Viking invasion. We had the chance to see how Vikings attacked and pillaged villages. We then began to plan a piece of writing, imagining that we are a Viking warrior about to set sail from Scandinavia on a long ship bound for England.

On Monday, a very special showing of ELF took place in the hall for the Year 5 and 6 children. It was very well attended and all the children who stayed to watch it thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Mrs Pennington and the Upper Phase staff were impressed with how well behaved all the children were. Lucy, from our class, looked fabulous in her very own Elf outfit! Take a look at her, we're sure you will agree with us.

Suddenly, a mysterious looking door has appeared on our Enchanted Wood display in class. Everyone is curious to know where it has landed. We can't wait to open the door next week and see which land is behind it!

This week in class we have lots of Multiplication Wristband winners. Andrew and Ellie M earned their 2s, 5s and 10s. Keely and Billy were awarded their 3s and 4s. Asim has got his 7s and 8s. How fantastic are they? McKenzie achieved his 6s and 9s. Amazingly, this is McKenzie's fourth wristband on the trot! WOW! What a multiplication master!

Also, many of the class have been working on learning their times tables and have achieved their times tables certificates. A big pat on the back from all the teachers!

This week in Assembly it was our termly Handwriting Competition. We all take a look at the children throughout the school who have worked hard to improve their handwriting. Our CERTIFICATE WINNER was Billy. He has worked hard, both in school and at home, to improve his writing. A BIG CONGRATULATIONS to him from all of 5W.

Just a quick reminder that it is our Christmas Party on Thursday 18th December...the children are already very excited. They may come into school in their own clothes for the day.

Today, all the teachers have come into school in their Christmas jumpers to help raise money for charity. Here are Mrs Walton and Mrs Roberts in theirs!

As always, we hope you all have a fantastic weekend and look forward to seeing you again on Monday.
