Friday 12th June

Friday 12th June

Welcome back to the Year 5W blog. It has been another busy week. Happily, the sun has been out most of this week. Sadly, rain is predicted for the weekend but fingers crossed for more sun next week.

Maths - This week we have been looking at time. We have investigated both analogue and digital clocks and can convert time between the two. After that, we moved onto the 24 hour clock. You either add or subtract 12 from the hour to go from morning to evening. It really is quite easy once you know how! Also, we have begun to look at timetables and find the difference between two times. What a lot we have packed in this week!

Try these online games which require you to match an analogue clock to its digital partner.

English – This week we have looked back at our work since the beginning of the year and assessed our handwriting improvement. Our teachers picked our Handwriting Competition winner-but more about that later. Also, we watched a clip from Pocahontas and then wrote what we thought happens next in the story.

Topic – We began the week by following a traditional American recipe to bake chocolate brownies. We ate these delicious, yummy treats over in the ALPS later in the week. We have looked at the history and meaning behind Native American dream catchers and then designed our own in our sketch books.

On Friday, we spent the morning over in the ALPS imagining what life would be like for a pilgrim arriving in New England. Firstly, we had to build ourselves a shelter to live in. After all that hard work, we stopped for some traditional American food (our own freshly baked brownies, pancakes, waffles and both potato chips and sweet potato chips) and a drink of juice. Finally, we had some time to sit, chill and admire the land around us. We used this as an opportunity to get our sketchbooks and draw what we could see. Everyone had a fantastic time outdoors. Here are some photos of our time outside exploring...

This week in Assembly our CERTIFICATE WINNER was Isobel for her absolutely STUNNING writing - every piece is a delight to read.

This week McKenzie has achieved his PLATINUM wristband. What a brilliant achievement. A massive well done for all his hard work on mastering ALL the multiplication and division facts and being able to apply them in maths.

It has been an AMAZING week for McKenzie this week as he was also selected as the 5W winner of the HANDWRITNG COMPETITION for this term. He won a cinema voucher and certificate. He was extremely pleased as he has worked hard since the beginning of the year to improve the presentation of his handwritng. A big well done from all of us here in Year 5W.

All that remains is to wish you all a very happy weekend and we will see you back in school on Monday.
