Friday 13th October

Friday 13th October

The children have all commented on it being Friday the 13th today…so no walking under ladders or crossing the path of a black cat today!

Welcome to this week’s blog from 5F. It has been another busy week here in Year 5F.

This week Mrs Pennington and her panel of senior playleaders interviewed for vacant playleader positions. The children were asked lots of questions including why they wanted to be a playleader. We are pleased to announce that two of the children from Year 5F were successful and have been offered the position. So, without further ado here are our newly appointed playleaders…

Maths – This week the children have continued trialling a new scheme called Questions for Learning. This involves the children answering questions live online using the classroom tablets. Also, we have been looking at column addition. The children have investigated adding a 4 digit number to a 3 digit number, two 4 digit numbers with carrying and adding numbers with more than 4 digits. They have also looked at turning a horizontal calculation (eg 2673+832) into a column calculation…

Take a look at this website which allows you to practise column addition…

English – The children have been looking at homophones for their spellings this week. A homophone is a word which sounds the same as another. However, it is spelt differently and means something completely different. For example…

past and passed deer and dear red and read

We have begun reading our new class novel The Sheep Pig by Dick King-Smith. The movie Babe is based on this fabulous book.

This week the children have been working on spelling and grammar in class. They have completed work on homophones. Also, they have looked at changing verbs from present to past tense. As well as that, the children have been investigating changing nouns and adjectives into verbs by adding the suffixes ate, ise and ify. For example…

Liquid (which is a noun) can become liquidate (which is a verb).

Topic – The children have been super, super excited all week in anticipation of our trip to Martin Mere on Wednesday. They had the most amazing day despite the awful weather. They experienced pond dipping using nets to catch small creatures and insects that were living in the water. Then, they got to examine them up close using magnifying glasses.

As well as that, we walked around the grounds and the children were able to see a vast array of birds and wildfowl up close. They fed many of them straight from their hands. It was a fantastic experience and all the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The photographs from the day are here on the Y5F blog for you to take a look at.

Just click on the link too take you to them...

Science – This week the children have been learning the lifecycle of a plant. They have produced some lovely work explaining the different stages in a plant’s life. Also, they wrote a rhyming poem about the lifecycle of a flowering plant.

Here is our CERTIFICATE WINNER this week. She won for her sparkling personality and cracking sense of humour that lights up the classroom every day. Well done from all of us in Year 5F. frownfrownfrown

All that remains is to wish you all a fantastic weekend and we will see you back in school on Monday.
