Friday 17th March

Friday 17th March

Welcome to this week’s blog from Year 5F.

Maths – The children have continued looking at fractions this week. They have been investigating the relationship between tenths, hundredths and thousandths. They discovered that hundredths are ten times bigger than tenths and thousandths are ten times bigger than hundredths and a hundred times bigger than tenths.

Take a look at this website which allows you to compare tenths with hundredths…

English – The children have been looking at the spelling rules for words ending in ible and able. Also, they have continued to look at our class book called Tuesday by David Wiesner. The children are using the pictures to make their own book with words, telling the story of the frogs. They have been investigating using expanded noun phrases in a sentence. Expanded noun phrases give more detail about the noun. This is achieved by describing (using adjectives) about the noun. Take a look at how to do it…

Chaos hit the town as the frogs were causing mayhem!

Chaos hit the quiet, sleeping town as the plump, speckled frogs were causing mayhem!

They also learned how use relative clauses (an extra bit of information) that includes a relative pronoun (who, which, when) in a sentence. Here are some examples of how to do it...

The army of frogs made their way onwards.

The army of frogs, which tumbled and turned through the night , made their way onwards.

As the town came into view, the birds perched peacefully on the telephone wires.

Science – The children have been investigating air resistance. They have looked at examples of air resistance in real-life. They are making their own spinner to investigate how air resistance will affect its fall to the ground.

Here is our CERTIFICATE WINNER for this week. He won for producing a moving piece of Easter art this week. He has stood out for ALL the right reasons. Well done and keep it up!
