Friday 21st November

Friday 21st November

Welcome back to the  Year 5W blog. It has been a busy week with lots of interesting and exciting activities going on!

Maths -  This week, we have been looking at multiplication. We have explored different ways to multiply both one and two digit numbers using equipment, the grid method and the short multiplication method. Some of us have really showed off and begun multiplying decimal numbers! Impressive or what?

English - This week we have continued work based around How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell. We have all written a report about a dragon. We included things like the appearance of our dragon, its diet, habitat and fighting techniques. Also, we have completed some comprehension based around the first few pages of the book.

Topic - This week we have been finding out about how the Vikings wrote. Did you know that they used a special kind of writing called runes. We wrote our names in runes and then a secret message for our table partners to de-code. Next, we got the paint out! We all printed our names on coloured card in runes and then a message. Our work will be going on display around the classroom.

This week we have been lucky enough to have a theatre company come into school. We watched a production of Sleeping Beauty, which tied in nicely with all our recent work based on Maleficent. All of the children thoroughly enjoyed the performance, especially when Mrs Walton got soaked by the evil Maleficent and her water gun!

On Thursday, the children visited The Deanery High School and took part in a dance lesson with Square One, a Christian dance group. The children learned a few new funky dance moves and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. After some extremely tasty toast and a bottle of water we then took part in an RE lesson based on anti-bullying. The children worked together to make all the parts of a flower filled with positive comments and ways to help people feel better about themselves.

This week in class we have had two Multiplication Wristband winners. McKenzie achieved his 2, 5 and 10 as well as his 7 and 8s. Kaylee was awarded her 2, 5 and 10s wristband - a huge well done to both of them. Also, many of the class have been working on their times tables and have achieved their times tables certificates. A big pat on the back from all the teachers!

Our Certificate Winner this week is Lewis for being a

Lovely learner,

Exceptional and eager,

Wows everyone who comes in the classroom, an

Ideal role model and a

Sensational superstar!

What more can we say? A huge well done to Lewis from everyone. And…as if that wasn’t enough Lewis went on to win the Pupil of the Week trophy for the Upper Phase in assembly too! Fantastic!

This week it was our class's turn to choose the music in Assembly. We choose a song called The Islander by a band called Nightwish. They come from Finland, which is one of Scandinavia's neighbours. As we have been learning all about the Vikings (who come from Scandinavia) we thought it was a great choice. Click on the link to have a listen...

Happy birthday to Rebecca and Florence who celebrated their tenth birthday this week. Double digits at last!

As always, we hope you all have a fantastic weekend and look forward to seeing you again on Monday.
