Friday 27th June

Friday 27th June

Hello and welcome back to Year 5W’s blog. It has, as always, been a busy week here.

Highlights from the week include…

Numeracy – This week we have been converting between different units of measurement, deriving facts from what we already know and column subtraction (including money and decimal numbers)! So as you can see it has been a jam-packed week of maths!

Literacy – This week we have been looking at the poem The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. It is a narrative poem, which means it tells a story. This poem tells the story of a highwayman who is in love with Bess, the beautiful, black-eyed, red-lipped daughter of the landlord of an inn. Unfortunately, Tim the ostler (who works in the stables) is also in love with Bess. In a jealous rage, he betrays the highwayman and reports his whereabouts to King Georges’s men who come to arrest him. Bess, trying to warn her love of their presence, shoots herself. What a story! We have been glued to the edge of our seats waiting to read on and find out how the poem ends.

On Thursday, we went across to the ALPS to scout for locations for a film version of The Highwayman to be shot. Also, we have started to produce posters advertising the film. As well as that, we have been writing Imagine 3 sentences to be used as a voiceover to advertise the The Highwayman Movie. Exciting times here in Year 5W!

Follow the link below to watch an animated version of the poem. It is one of Mr Metcalfe's favourites. smiley

CFL – This week we have continued our topic called What’s it like Down Under? We have been finding out about Ayers Rock in Australia. For example, did you know that the Aborigine name for it is Uluru?

Tuesday afternoon it was our annual Sport’s Day. All of the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Everyone was incredibly supportive of each other, cheering each other on and congratulating everyone for their efforts. All the teachers were incredibly proud of the children. Well done to everyone for taking part and thank you to all the parents who were able to come along and watch. Here are some pictures from the day…

Our Certificate Winner this week is Connor for his commitment and perseverance in achieving his Platinum band. Well deserved! His mental maths is also superb! So, a big well done from us all! no

A MASSIVE congratulations to Tyler B and Connor on achieving their PLATINUM wristband. The whole class is super proud of them. smiley no smiley

It was Jack’s birthday on Wednesday and is Junior’s today…so a big HAPPY 10th BIRTHDAY to both boys from us all. We hope they have both enjoyed their special day.

On Thursday, Mrs Roberts introduced a  Westfield Maths app (developed here in school by Mr Moore and Mr Hanson) which is available to the children to download onto any Android device. The children can practise times tables, rounding numbers, mutiplying by 10, 100 and 100 and and number bonds. The children were very impressed with it and seemed keen to have a go at home. If you wish for your child to take advantage of the app, then please follow the instructions on the school website under LATEST NEWS. Alternatively, you may send your child's Android tablet or mobile phone into school and Mrs Roberts will have the app installed for them.

Your child is bringing home a letter tonight informing you about their Year 6 residential trip. This year, school has opted for a different venue. The children will be staying at Winmarleigh Hall, near Preston. The visit is being organised by PGL Adventure Holidays, who come highly recommended. In addition to PGL instructors, pupils will also be accompanied by Westfield staff.

This venue allows ALL the children to be accommodated, all activities are based on site and the cost is less expensive (at a total cost of £100) than previous residentials. To secure a place for your child, please return the slip and a £25 deposit to school by TUESDAY 15th JULY at the latest.

Follow the link below to the Winmarleigh Hall website. If you click on the button which says DVDS you can view some of the activities available, as well as hearing parent's views.

PLEASE NOTE

On Monday 30th June, the children will be visiting Abraham Guest for a taster afternoon to see what High School is like. If you are attending the parent's session then you will able to take your child at the end. ALL other children will be returned to Westfield School by coach for 4.15, where they can then be picked up as normal. School will be following your usual home-time arrangements unless otherwise informed.

As always we hope you all have a fantastic weekend. Let’s hope that the sun makes another appearance!
