Friday 27th November

Friday 27th November

Welcome back to Year 5F’s blog. This has been a strange and unusual week as on Monday part of the ALPS was cordoned off with police tape. When we went to explore we discovered an alien egg!

Maths – This week we have been looking at multiplication using either the grid method or the short multiplication method. The children have quickly got to grips with both methods and can now either multiply a 3 digit number by a 1 digit number, a 2 digit number by a 2 digit number or some can even multiply a 3 digit number by a 2 digit number! How clever is that?

Have a go at home playing a game that allows you to use the grid method or a game that allows you to use short multiplication.

The children have continued making a HUGE effort to learn their 7 times tables and division facts. Could you please help your child at home by asking them to recite the facts and test them to see if they can answer quick fire multiplication and division questions?

English – This week has been ALIEN WEEK in school. The children have completed a variety of writing tasks this week based around this theme. On Monday, they wrote a report describing the alien egg which they found in the ALPS. On Tuesday, they thought about which planet the alien may have come from and using pictures to help they wrote a description of their home planet. On Wednesday, we watched a short film about an alien landing on earth. The children used this to help them write a description of the alien ship landing on earth. On Thursday, we thought about our SUPER SENTENCES. The children were given images of aliens and used either a De:De sentence, a Simile sentence, a 2 Ad sentence, a Noun, Who, Which, Where sentence or an Imagine 3 sentence to write about each alien. Finally, on Friday the children wrote a description of an alien which they had created. They wrote a page for a book with a non-chronological report on their alien. They have been extremely busy this week and we have been blown away by the quality and standard of their work.

Science – This week the children have made alien slime…YUCK! They had an amazing time! Pictures to follow…

Art/Design Technology – The children have designed their very own alien inspired mask. They have begun to construct it using gummed brown paper and water! How different is that? They have worked with a partner. Each partner constructed the mask on the face of the other person. The children are now strengthening it with more gummed paper. Next week, they will add features and finally paint it.

Here are some pictures…

Also, the children have designed their very own alien wallpaper. This will be used as the background to a display board in class. Once completed, their alien masks will be displayed using their wallpaper.

Our CERTIFICATE WINNER this week is Hui Min for taking her learning to another level by producing a truly breath-taking Learning Log. A big well done from all of us!

frownfrownfrown She went on to win the PUPIL OF THE WEEK trophy for the Upper Phase. We are all very proud of her. nonono

So, as you can see it has been another amazing week here in Year 5. All that remains to say is to have a fantastic weekend and we will see you back in school on Monday.
