Hello and welcome back to our blog. Here's what we have been up to this week....

English

We have started our new book, Stickman. The children are really enjoying this and we have done some great work on it already! We have written descriptions, predictions and detailed paragraphs so far!

We have done loads of work in maths this week, it's been very busy! We have done data, looking at bar graphs, word problems using RUCSAC method and symmetry! We took our symmetry outside which was great fun!

Science

We have been looking at the things that plants need to keep healthy. We did an experiment with celery and placed in red coloured water to see what would happen to it. Ask your children about their predictions!

Topic

Our new topic is all about the famous artist Lowry. We will be exploring his paintings and looking at the local area.

Parent and Child Maths Workshop

Thank you to all who have attended so far, it's been very successful and beneficial so far. If you are interested in joining please speak to me or a member of the Year 3 team.

Friday 15th May 2015

Hello everyone. Here is what we have been up to in Year 3 this week...

English

We have been writing diaries based on Bill's New Frock considering how he would have felt when he realised he had turned into  girl. We have also written non chronological reports telling Bill all about Westfield, we then typed them up using Word. It was great fun!

Maths

We have spent a lot of time on multiplication, we have even started doing the grid method which we really enjoyed doing.

Topic

We have been exploring our local area in topic and have ben looking at other major cities and towns locally. We then used our knowledge of where we re to decide which towns are nearest North, South etc to us. The children did really well with this.

Computing

We were really lucky this week to have Mr Price come into our class and teach us all about the difference between the internet and the WWW. We even made our own networks in class! It was fab!

Have a great weekend and see you next week!

Love from Mrs Parry, Mrs Foster and Mrs Rose xxx

Welcome to our last blog of this term!

Well what a week we have had, here is what we have been up to!

English

In English we became authors for the week. We took our wordless book, Good Dog Carl and recreated it using our very own dogs! The imagination behind some of he stories was amazing, we were super impressed. We held our own class competition for the best book which was won by Marley Tymon, it was a very tough choice! We also loved sharing our books with Year 4, it was interesting to see what other classes had done. Thank you Mr Price and Year 4!

Maths

We have been measuring in units of weight this week. The children weighed different types of objects around the classroom and learned all about grams and kilograms.

Topic

We looked at different mountain ranges in Europe and the children were asked to answer a range of questions about what they had learned. A great job done!

We were happy to watch Year 5s Easter assembly rehearsal this week, we loved the songs!

We say goodbye to Mrs Stirrup today, she has worked alongside us for many weeks now and we will miss her a lot.

Have a fantastic Easter break and we will look forward to seeing you all on the 20th.

Lots of love from

Mrs Parry, Mrs Foster and Mrs Rose xxx

Hello and Welcome to Year 3's Blog!

We have had another busy week at school! We enjoyed it on Tuesday when the Prison Service and Police service visited school to teach us all about actions and consequences. We learned lots of interesting facts and how to stay safe when outside of school! We had the pleasure of meeting 2 cute, lively police dogs who kept us very entertained.

A big Congratulations to Shaun and Stuart, who won the 'pupil of the week' certificate. We are really pleased to see them settle well into Westfield Life!

We had another fun filled morning this morning watching the Eclipse. We all gathered in the large hall and watched it on a giant screen, it was so fascinating. We came back to class and had a great discussion all about it! It linked very nicely to our Light and Shadows Topic in Science!

Our brains have been working extremely hard this week, we have learned all about volcanoes and mountains around the world and watched some news clips about Natural Disasters. We even wrote a persuasive letter to Miss Power and Mrs Parry encouraging them to visit a range of mountains. We included lots of Super Sentences!

Hello and welcome to our blog...this is what we have been up to this week!!!

Well what a week we have had in maths, we have been looking at telling the time both digital and analogue. The children made a good start at this but understanding time is quite a difficult concept and I would ask you kindly to please do this at home with your children too. Check out our maths video which shows u a little of what we did this week.

In English we have been using our reading skills, super sentence knowledge and even looked at the very grown up 'fronted adverbials' today which your children did a great job with, very well done!

In Science we have been continuing with our lights and shadows unit, looking at translucent, transparent and opaque objects. Well done with this year 3!

We had great fun making Roman mosaics in topic, even though we made such a mess! The children made a mosaic of Roman numerals, very impressive!!

Hello and welcome back to our blog!

We have been linking our topic to English this week and have been discussing the heroic Boudicca which led us to hot seating today. The children came up with some great questions and answers in this session which shows me that they have taken in a lot from this topic, well done!

Subtraction has been on the cards in maths, looking at subtracting near multiples of 10. Some found this tricky at first but kept going which always pays off!

We have continued our light an shadows topic in science, looking at natural, artificial and reflective light. The children have got a good understanding of this  now.

In topic we have been looking at the training and uniform of the Roman Soldiers, discussing the advantages and disadvantages of the armour they wore. Some fantastic ideas Year 3, well done!

Have a great weekend, I hope there's lots of snow for you to play in! See you Monday!

Hello everyone and welcome back to our blog!

We have had an action packed week this week, here's what we have been doing...

In English we have been looking at the famous Boudicca, understanding who she was and what we did. This helped us to create some fabulous adjectives and super sentences to describe her.

We have been looking at mental strategies for addition in maths, the children did really well using a wide range of strategies that they know and applied them in problem solving.

We have continued to look at natural and artificial light in science and the children made great contributions in class towards this.

The highlight of the week though has to be our visit from two REAL Roman soldiers. This has aided our topic massively and the children learned so much about Roman life and even how to fight in battles! What a fabulous day!

Have a lovely weekend and we will see you next week.

Hello and welcome back to our final blog of 2014. What a term it has been!

We have had an action packed Christmas themed week this week from writing letters to Santa in English to finding all possibilities for Elves outfits in Maths!

I am sure your children have told you about the cheeky little elves that have been visiting us this week, they have lent themselves to some brilliant elf description writing!

We had our Christmas party this week which was lots of fun, the children (and staff) had a brilliant time. The children also enjoyed our cinema afternoon where we had lots of treats and watched the Polar Express – it really got us in the Christmas mood.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support with encouraging your children to read at home, this really does have a tremendous impact upon their understanding and their writing, so thank you again.

All that is left to say is all the very best for a safe and happy Christmas and we look forward to seeing you in the New Year. Have fun and enjoy!

Welcome to our blog this week and what a week we have had!

In English we brought to a close our Snowman story and what wonderful pieces of writing your children produced! Their descriptions were amazing and a true credit to the work they have put into their English recently. Well done Year 3!

We have been looking at measurement in maths and the different units of measurement. Children explored the classroom with rulers and metre sticks before working out measurement sums.

We had a great day at Manchester Museum on Wednesday which was linked to our Stone Age topic. The children became archaeologists for the day and explored different artefacts relating to the Stone Age. We were very proud to see that the children made links between what they have learned in class and what they looked at in the museum.

Our xylophone assembly was a huge success. We were so proud of the children’s performance as we are sure you were too.

Just a reminder it’s the Christmas party on Wednesday afternoon, the children may wear party clothes.

Have a great weekend

Hello and welcome back to our blog this week. Here’s what we have been up to……

In English we have been exploring the Stone Age Boy and wrote a diary entry as if the children were actually him! We had some great interpretations of his adventures, the children did a great job.

In maths we have looked at multiplication and division. This led to multiples of numbers and the children had to identify numbers which had the same multiples. Well done to you!

We have started our new Rocks and Soils topic this week. We turned into rock detectives looking around the school at how rocks are used every day. There were some very interesting things that we found out – ask your children what they found out.

In topic we looked at a timeline from the Stone Age to the Iron Age and learned some really complicated words like Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Mesolithic.

We had a great turn out for Children in Need, thank you for your efforts and donations.

Have a great weekend and see you on Monday.

We have been looking at our muscles in Science and also vertebrates and invertebrates...ask your children what the difference is between the two!

In Topic we created posters with exciting sentences to promote the different wonders in Australia.

Please could you send in any cereal boxes into school on Monday to help with our DT topic. Thank you.

Have a great weekend, see you Monday!

Hello and welcome back to our blog. We have had a super week this week learning lots of new concepts right across the curriculum.

The children have particularly enjoyed The Pirate Code that we have looked at in English and have created some fab pieces of work from it.

Their mental calculation strategies have been put to the test in Maths...we are super impressed with what they have learned so far.

In our topic we have been looking at oceans of the world and have even learned a new song to help us remember them...ask your children to tell you about it!

We would like to say a huge well done to our Super Readers for their efforts at home with their reading, keep it up, it makes a huge difference to what they can achieve in school!

A huge well done to Lily who won Pupil of the Week and Alexa who won Mrs Parry's Star of the Week. Girls, you are stars!

Hello to you all and a warm welcome to Year 3. Hope you all had a fantastic summer holiday.

It's been back to work for us in class and we have had an action packed week looking at what this term has in store for us.

We have begun our topic which is entitled 'What a Wonderful World', this will look at the seven Continents, countries, cities, seas and oceans and much more. Ask your children to sing you the song about Continents!

In Science we re looking at 'Animals including Humans' we had great fun drawing round each other and labelling different bones and organs!

We have been learning all about what your children got up to in the holidays in English as they have been writing descriptively about their events.

In Maths we have been looking at the properties of 2D and 3D shapes...they did a fab job!

Just a couple of reminders....

PE is on a Friday afternoon, please ensure your child has their kit in on that day.

Reading books are being sent home, we would be grateful if you could listen to your child read every night, even if it's just a few pages, then sign their reading record books. If they read every day they are awarded a certificate at the end of the week and appear on our blog.

Have a lovely weekend and we will see you on Monday!
