Friday 11th July 2014

This week in Year 4F we celebrated the world cup with a week of world cup activities. On Monday we took part in a football tournament between the two Year 4 classes. There were 10 teams in total but there could only be one winner. Congratulations to Team 1 from Year 4F – Dylan, Ryan E, Chris, Hayley and Yasmin.

On Wednesday the whole of Year 4 also took part in a Brazilian carnival dance and performed their routine in front of teachers and parents at Abraham Guest. The performance was spectacular and all children who took part made Westfield proud.

Throughout the week, Year 4F also designed and created a mascot to represent our world cup team: Croatia. After a great deal of debate we decided on ‘Daily – The Croatian Dalmatian’.

Our achievement certificate for the week went to Ryan E for making the effort to come to school at 3:15 to attend choir practice even though his class were not in that day. A fantastic sign of commitment!

This week in year 4, we have had a great week! We had a super trip to Liverpool on Wednesday and Miss Power was really impressed with our behaviour! We left school and had a long journey on a huge, double decker bus on the motorway. When we got there we jumped off the bus and heading over to the ferry terminal. We had to wait a little while before boarding the ferry, but we didn't mind the wait because the sun was shining brightly! The boat journey was exciting, a little windy, but we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

After that, we had a walk along the River Mersey and looked at some of the famous buildings in Liverpool! We saw the Liver Birds and the Echo Arena! We had our lunch outside sat on a grass verge and admired the beautiful views! Some of us even had a little sunbathe!

Sadly, it was time to go home, so we jumped back on the bus and made our way back to Westfield. Some of us were that tired we fell asleep the whole way home!

This week in school we have been busy looking at telling the time in Numeracy. Some of us have found it a little tricky, but we tried so hard! Looking at clocks at home and telling the time would really help us! Thanks Mums and Dads!

In Literacy, we have been doing lots of writing, recount of our trip, letter to Minu and even a tourist guide to Liverpool (now that we are experts!)

We are very excited to be breaking up today for 2 WHOLE weeks! Enjoy the Easter holidays and make sure you do a little bit of reading and LOTS of practice on your times tables to make sure we keep achieving these bands!

Lots of Love Miss Power, Mrs Pickavance and Mrs Marron! x

Today has been an exciting day in Year 4. We have been on a trip to Rivington Pike to experience the countryside! It was so much fun, but extremely windy! We all looked like little Leo Holdings in our walking gear and welly boots! It was a tiring, uphill walk, but Miss Power was so impressed with our efforts as we did not give up! We were glad we persevered when we got to the top as the views were breath takingly beautiful!!!!!!! Check out our pics below!

We have enjoyed learning about our new CFL topic this week 'Where do you think you are?' We made huge posters all about the landmarks in Wigan and Miss Power has displayed these in the classroom! :)

In Science we have been learning about living things and how we can group them into similar categories! We have even looked at how we can use a key to identify animals that we are unsure of based on their characteristics and how they look!

We Hope you visit again next week! Have a lovely weekend.... Don't forget that we need lots of practice with our timetables in order to gain all of our wristbands! Also.....10 minutes of reading will help us to become real book worms!

Lots of Love from Miss Power, Mrs Pickavance and Mrs Marron xxx

Hello and welcome to another blog by Y4F

We have had another busy, fun week in class this week. In NUMERACY this week we have started to look at CHUNKING !!!! We have been looking at ways to work out complex problems for example 126 Divided by 9 . These are quite long sums to complete and take a lot of thought ! but the children took it all in their stride and managed to complete these problems without any fuss! So a big well done to you! Ask your child about chunking and see what they can tell you.

In LITERACY this week we have been looking at PIRATES! We have been looking at a book called The Pirate Code. We have been describing pirates and also writing book reviews! We are really enjoying this topic and to coincide with WORLD BOOK DAY we have decided it would be fun if 4F all tried to dress in a pirate theme!!!!!! If possible could your child dress up as a pirate , deck hand, lady pirate or even a parrot !!! I'm sure you can all think of something and of course all the teachers will be taking part too!

In Science this week we have written adventure stories about the journey of a piece of food travelling through our bodies ! The children had lots of fun with this and we had a terrified carrot being chopped with a gleaming sharp knife then dipped in scalding steaming hot water!!!! All very scary stuff ! and we were on the edge of our seats! We also made our own stomachs and digestive system using biscuits , water , orange juice and a see through plastic bag. Check out the 2 photos below

And finally on Wednesday we started our swimming lessons! although some of us were very nervous , we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and there were lots of sad faces when the lesson had finished and we had to leave the pool! I'm sure we will all look forward to next week's lesson!

Well its time to say goodbye again and time to wish you a safe and fun weekend ! Get plenty of rest ready for a new week in school and we will see you bright and early on Monday morning.
(Doors open 8.35am )

Hello, Welcome back to our Blog.

What a great week we have had in Year 4F!

LITERACY

In Literacy we have been looking at explanation texts and we have watched a strange short film called the Shirt Machine. This film was an explanation of how the shirt machine worked.... We enjoyed it that much that we had to turn it into an explanation text for others to read! We all did very well!
Today in our Big Writing we even wrote our own explanation text titled 'What is Westfield?' We explained everything we could about school and included all the features we needed to! High 5 everyone!

NUMERACY

In Numeracy we have been busy learning our fractions. Miss Power tried to be mean by setting us challenging tasks to find the fractions of amounts, showing fractions which were less than or greater than and even ordering and comparing fractions..... but as usual we have WOWed her with our skills and determination!!

SCIENCE

In Science we have just finished learning all about solids and liquids. Miss Power set us a desert island challenge to filter sandy water using different materials. We eventually had clean drinking water. YEY!!!

In CFL we have been learning more about the Story of Diwali. We created our own story boards to show the different parts of Rama and Sita's journey!

Today we all looked fantastic for Children in Need.... Mr Sheriff let us come to school in our pyjamas!!!! It was so strange seeing our friends in their dressing gowns and slippers but we have had a lovely day! A huge thank you to parents for your generous donations... It was very kind!

Have a lovely Weekend and we will see you bright and early on Monday! We have a little surprise on Monday.. Here is your clue......

Hello and welcome back to Year 4 F - We hope you have had a fabulous week off and enjoyed the Halloween and Bonfire night celebrations!

In SCIENCE this week we have been looking at seperating solids. We all became scientists after an incident occurred in Miss Powers kitchen at home! All Miss Powers ingredients were mysteriously mixed together and it was our job to seperate them all . Using different equipment we had to seperate rice from flour ! salt from sugar ! pasta from rice ! and even gravel from sand! It was a big job but being super scientists we sooned managed to help her out!

In NUMERACY this week we have had a very exciting week and have been measuring!!! We have looked at different ways to measure including Kilometres , Metres , Centimetres and Millimetres. We worked in groups and worked in and around the school estimating the length of different objects and then measuring them to see if our estimations were correct ! We had lots of fun!

In Literacy we have been looking at explanation text and we have been identifying important parts of the text. We have identified the title , the captions , diagram , labels , connectives , sub headings , paragraphs , and the introductions. So we have been very busy!
Also to keep in with the Halloween week we have been looking at a picture of a creepy old house and thinking of fantastic WOW words to describe the smells , the noises , the feel and what it looks like. All the children made a huge effort and produced some great detailed descriptions.Well done .

In French with Mrs Wilson this week we have had a lovely time learning yet more animal names and learning a great song about Westfield Zoo! We look forward to our french lesson each week!

Welcome back to our Blog! We have had a very busy few weeks. We had so much fun learning our lines for the Harvest Assembly. We hope you enjoyed watching it as much as we enjoying performing it! Lots of us are still singing our Rock and Roll songs! The link for the assembly is on the school website under 'Latest News'.

We are all very excited that our half term holiday starts tonight......we are all very tired after an exhausting 8 weeks of school! Miss Power has worked us very hard and we think we deserve a week off! Yipppeeeee!!!

In Literacy this week, we have been looking at how to improve our sentences. We have been re reading and checking that our sentences make sense. We also know when to use ! and ? in sentences! Our progress so far has really pleased Miss Power!

In Numeracy we have been handling data and reading information from a pictogram! We have also been creating our own data and finding out more about our class!

We had lots of fun in Science this week melting solids. Do you know which solids melt? We used a source of heat and made sure we carried out a fair test. We used chocolate, ice, butter and candle wax. We also remembered lots of facts about solids and about liquids!!!!

In CFL we have each designed and created a sarcophagus. Mrs Marron has kindly helped up to make a wrapped mummy to keep inside!!!!!

We hope you all have a lovely half term holiday! Remember Fireman Joe's advice on how to stay safe during Halloween and Bonfire Night.

Lots of Love Y4F! xxx

Hello again! Welcome back to our blog to hear about yet another busy week!!

We had a fantastic time on our trip to Liverpool World Museum to learn more about the Ancient Egyptians. We really impressed the staff at the museum with our knowledge and facts! We got to touch ancient artefacts, look at preserved animals and even touched the skin of a cheetah and a snake! Steve at the museum taught us a clever way of remembering which organ goes in which Canopic jar! Can you remember and tell the adults at home?

In French we have been learning the names of animals and how to put the name of animal into a full sentence. Mrs Wilson is very impressed with our efforts learning a new language because it can be tricky!

We have been busy practicing our Harvest Assembly during every spare few minutes we get..... we have been learning our lines and new songs. We can't wait to perform it for you all next Wednesday! We can't tell you anymore about it..... as it is a big surprise...... we all know you will really enjoy yourselves!

Please remember to bring in your clothes we need for the assembly as soon as possible!
Boys- black t-shirt
Girls- pink/white plain outfit......

Have a lovely weekend! Lots of Love the Y4F team! xx

Hello again, we are glad you have come to visit to learn all about what we have been doing in Y4F...................
In Numeracy we have been exploring the ALPS area to see what Numeracy we could do outside! We were a little confused at first but soon found out that there is lots we can do including..... symmetry, fractions, measuring, weighing, addition, subtraction, multiplying and even comparing!

LITERACY

In Literacy we have been looking again at Newspapers. We even did our literacy lesson in the ALPS! We pretended to be journalists who had found a special object in the wooded area! It was very exciting!!!

In CFL we are loving our Ancient Egyptian Topic and we now lots of facts! We especially like the mummification process!!!!!!! Its full of gory details!

Big congratulations to our certificate winner..... HAYLEY! You are a superstar!

See you next week! Lots of Love Y4F! xxx

You can see our Egyptian Mummy song
here!

Good Morning and Welcome back to Year 4's Blog!

We have had a very productive week in Y4F.... and been working as hard as ever! We are looking forward to a few days off school to recover!

LITERACY

In Literacy we are now looking at Newspapers and have a big task to do today..... we are going to be News Reporters and we are going to write our own article. We have thought very carefully about it and we are going to turn our favourite Nursery Rhymes into News Reports! Hopefully next week we can share some of our exciting headlines with you!

NUMERACY

In Numeracy we have been looking at inverse number problems! We have had to use our skills to find the missing numbers!

Can you solve this sum?.................. 3 x ? = 12 Which operation would you use?

SCIENCE

In Science this week we have looked at how solids behave like liquids. This is because they are made of tiny pieces called particles. We can pour some solids like salt, sand and sugar! But Y4F were not confused by this and understand that some solids 'disguise' themselves as liquids.

In CFL we have been learning all about the Ancient Egyptian style of writing. It is called Hierogylphics and we have looked at an alphabet containing symbols to write our own names! Miss Power is choosing a few to put on display in class! We have even learned a new song! Its called 'We're making Mummies'! Hopefully we can record it and put it on blog for you to see!

A big congratulations to Jake who won the certificate this week for trying to independently attempt his Numeracy! Well Done Jake!

We hope you all have a lovely weekend! See you bright and early on Monday morning!

Lots of Love 4F xxxxx

Hello and a big warm welcome back to Year 4F's Blog!!!

Again.. we have been very busy bees and we are still impressing Miss Power everyday! She can't believe how well we are doing!

In Numeracy we have been looking at multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100! We understand the rule that each digit changes its value. Some of us have even been solving problems!!!!! WOW!

In Literacy we have been looking at poems and how they can create lovely images in our heads! We have looked at lots of techniques including alliteration, similes, metaphors and repetition. Our favourite poem this week was our magic box poem by Kit Wright.Click on the link below and watch a video of our children acting out a poem called 'Last night i saw the city breathe'.

In Science..... We have been looking at solids and liquids. We have been involved with an experiment and looked at how the volume of liquid stayed the same even though the size of the container changed!

In CFL we have been doing more work on the Ancient Egyptians....... We have been looking at Tutankhamun's tomb, who found it and all about the 'Curse of the Mummy'.
We have completed a Tutankhamun fact file. We are very excited for our school trip!

Please can we remind children and parents who have not yet handed in the slip and payment for the trip to do so soon!!!

Well done to all the children who completed their homework this week and who have read! We are keeping a record of all of our fantastic readers!

A Big Congratulations to our certificate winner Jeya..!

And a huge  to our lovely Jamilah and Yasmin and Jeya (for wednesday)

Hello and Welcome back to Year 4F's Blog! We are glad you have returned to read all about what we have been up to this week!!

We are all very glad that it is Friday...... We are ready for a well deserved rest!

In NUMERACY we have been very busy bees... We have been looking at 2d and 3d shapes and can recall the properties about them! We have even been RAPPING to our very own 'Polygon Rap'
Ask us to show your our new shape song! We are now fabulous at rememering our shape names! Well done everyone!

In LITERACY we have been looking at similes. Jeya knew that a simile is when we compare something to something else! Well done Jeya! We use the word 'as' or 'like' when we write similes........Check out some of our ideas below!

Rebecca.... 'As fierce as a grizzly bear'

Michael......'As big as a lion'

Jeya...... 'As cold as a freezing snowman outside '
Thomas.....' The moon is like a pearl hanging in the sky surrounded by bright twinkling diamonds!!

We used our simile skills to create a moon poem which is now on display in our class! check out the picure below!

In Science we have been looking at solids and liqids and learning about the differences. We can name lots of solids and lots of liquids.

In French we have been working with Mrs Wilson to learn sayings and numbers to 10. Mrs Wilson read a story to us in French..... we had to listen really carefully to undersand it!

In CFL we have completed a timeline of events....... we really impressed Miss Power with our ordering skills. We have also looked at artefacts and thought about who they may have belonged to! We had lots of discussions about what they may have been made from!!

A big welcome to our new visitor... We are very lucky to have a visitor... every Tuesday and Friday... Mr Lawrence is going to have lots of fun in our class!

Well done to our certificate winners... Ryan, Jamilah and Yasmin!
Have a lovely weekend.... lots of love Miss Power, Mrs Pickavance Mrs Marron and Mr Lawrence.

Hello and Welcome to Year 4F's first ever blog!!!!!!

We have had a lovely rest over the holidays and we are back in school and raring to go!

We have been very busy bee's so far and we are looking forward to the weekend!

In LITERACY we have been doing lots of work on sentences ready for our Big Write today. We have looked at how to make sentences more interesting and longer. We have all impressed Miss Power with our 'WOW' words!!!!!

In NUMERACY we have been doubling numbers and playing a fantastic new maths game called 'Hit the Button'. Thomas has been our champion so far! We have also been partitioning numbers and ordering number from smallest to largest, this has been tricky as the numbers were very large........ But again Miss Power was very pleased with us!

In CFL we have started our new topic all about Ancient Egypt. We are really enjoying learning all about a country far away and we have learnt lots of keywords! We have done lots of map work and have looked at the different temperatures in Egypt and England!!

We have spent lots of time in the reading area.... and exploring our new classroom! We think we will have lots of fun in Y4F!

Have a lovely weekend and we will see you bright and early on Monday! Don't forget to read over the weekend.

Lots of love Miss Power, Mrs Pickavance and Mrs Marron! xx
