Hi everyone!

We have had a fantastic time settling into year 1 this week!

English

In English we have been reviewing our learning from reception and practising writing words using our Fred fingers and sounding them out carefully. We have started to use finger spaces between our words and we are really trying to focus on our handwriting.

Maths

In maths we have been looking at the numbers to 10. We have been learning to count out a given amount from a larger group and we are practising writing our numbers correctly.

Science

In Science we continued to learn about materials and have matched objects to the materials they are made from. We could see that our school jumpers were made from fabric, the door was made from wood and the windows were made using glass.

Topic

We have continued with our All About Me topic and this week we have thought about our favourite toys that we like to play with at home. We love playing with dolls and cars in year 1 as well as enjoying playing football. Next we will learn about how toys have changed over time. Talk at home about how your toys were different to their toys now.

We also had a look at the remarkable life of Queen Elizabeth II as we remember her and celebrate her life this weekend.

Computing

In computing we introduced algorithms by looking at the rhyme, 'Head, shoulders, knees and toes', and used pictured to show this in the correct sequence.

Soon in year 1, we will start to go to the ALPS on Fridays. Please can you ensure that your child has appropriate footwear and clothing (a coat!) in school.

We will continue to change reading books as often as you need them to be changed and would recommend that you are reading with your child every night, but that you might wish to keep the book for a couple of days to reread for fluency. If you would like your child's book to be changed please ask your child to hand both the reading book and reading record (monkey book) to an adult in their class. The children are rewarded in school each time they read.

Finally, a huge well done to lots of you this week for receiving your shooting star for being on time all week! Well done, keep it up!

Have a lovely long weekend,

Miss Rose, Mrs Pickavance & Miss Sherlock
