Friday 11th July

Friday 11th July

Hello and welcome back to another busy week in Year 5W.

Highlights from the week include…

Numeracy – This week we have been playing maths games that involve place value. Also, we have been solving World Cup word problems.

Literacy – This week we have continued our work on the poem The Highwayman by Alfred Noyse. We have designed and made WANTED posters for the Highwayman, as well as writing an additional scene from the poem. We thought about how Tim the ostler might have reacted to seeing Bess and the Highwayman together. What did he do? What did he say? We decided that he was the one who reported the Highwayman's whereabouts to King George's soldiers and wrote about how he was feeling and what he was thinking as he did it.

As well as that, this week we have been researching and writing reports about Argentina (our World Cup country) to make our very own Argentina books. They are jam-packed full of interesting facts and look fantastic.

CFL – This week we have continued our new topic called What’s it like Down Under? We have begun to look at Aboriginal art. Did you know that Aborigines used dots to create pictures? We have produced our own pictures of Australian animals by dotting with felt-tips on cartridge paper.

This week in school it has been a World Cup themed week. The children had their own mini World Cup competition where teams from 5W played against teams from 5F. The winning team was captained by Tyler J. Here are some pictures from the tournament...

"It was hard work, we played five matches back to back. Everyone on the team played well. My Man of the Match would be Jack (our goalie) because he kept a clean sheet until the final match. We were all really shocked to win as there were some excellent players on the other teams. Thank you to all the other teams for playing fairly and to all the congratulations from everyone. It was almost as good as the real World Cup holding up the trophy at the end!"  Tyler J

Also this week, we have been re-designing the Argentina football strip. We made our own t-shirts by folding up a piece of A3 paper. How clever is that? Mr Sherbourne challenged each class to produce their own Westfield World Cup mascot using recycled materials. Each child in class designed a mascot and then were able to vote for the best one. Viraj had his design Sporty Wiggler chosen. Over the last few days we have all been busy beavering away to make Sporty Wiggler come to life!

A massive well done to Adan our certificate winner this week. He won it for effort, enthusiasm and for being a good sport in the football tournament. Mr Sherriff congratulated him in Assembly for his sportsmanship and he was awarded the Pupil of the Week for the Upper Phase. So a big well done from us all. no no no

This week Alex, Sophie and Tyler J were all awarded their GOLD multiplication wristbands and Austin received his PLATINUM. As always, we are super impressed! smiley

We hope you all have a fantastic weekend and enjoy watching the World Cup final between Argentina and Germany.
