Friday 17th October

Friday 17th October

Welcome to Year 5W’s blog for this week.

Maths -  This week we have been looking at the perimeter of both simple and compound shapes. We had to add up all the sides to reach our answers, which was good mental addition practise for us all! when tackling compound shapes we often had to work out the length of a missing side-which can be a little tricky at times! However, most of the class can now do it independently.

English - This week we have been looking at adverbs. Did you know that an adverb's job is to describe the verb in a sentence? We discovered that lots of adverbs end in ly. For example, quietly, softly, gently. We found out that you can put the adverb at the beginning or on the middle of a sentence. For example...

The boy slammed the door angrily and ran down the road.

Topic - Yesterday, it was our class trip to Martin Mere. Luckily, the weather was very kind to us and the sun shone all day. Everyone had a fantastic time and learned a lot. We spent the morning pond dipping and then looking at the creatures we found under a microscope. Some of the children found sticklebacks, some greater water boatmen, some great diving beetles, as well as finding a selection of nymphs, snails and worms!

We had a short time to play on the adventure park before lunch. Both the children (and adults) had a blast! As the weather was so glorious, we managed to have our lunch outside. Then in the afternoon we had some free time. We broke up into smaller groups and had a walk around the wetlands looking at all the birds in their habitats. the children were all given a bag of food so that they could feed the wildfowl as they went long.

Please take a look at our pictures from the day...
