Friday 18th July

Friday 18th July

Hello and welcome to our very last blog from Year 5W. What a year it has been! Mr Metcalfe, Mrs Roche and Mrs Roberts have really enjoyed working with all the children and will be sorry to see them go. However, we are sure they will go on to impress their Year 6 teachers and continue making excellent progress.

Highlights from the week include…

Numeracy – This week we have been looking at co-ordinates and have produced cartoon characters on grids by following the co-ordinate instructions.

Literacy – Our work this week has centred around How to Train your Dragon. we have all worked through a booklet based on the hit books and films. Also, following our trip to the cinema on Tuesday morning, we have reviewed the new film, which we all thoroughly enjoyed.

In an excited voice, Charlotte said, " My favourite part was when someone close to Hiccup was lost. Consequently, it made me cry! It was a rollercoaster ride for all the family!"

Interestingly, Joshua added, " I liked the events and how there was tragedy and surprise in the film."

CFL – This week we have continued our topic called What’s it like Down Under? We have continued to look at Aboriginal art. We have produced our own pictures of Australian animals by dotting with paint using pieces of wood. They looked fantastic!

Can you guess which animals these are?

Also, we have made our own boomerangs out of card. Did you know that originally boomerangs were used to scare birds and wildlife into nets that the Aborigines would then capture and use to feed themselves? Neither did we! Once we hade made and decorated ours we took them outside and tried to throw and catch them. Unfortunately, not everyone managed to catch theirs. Our overall winner was Terri, who threw and caught hers with ease. Please enjoy the pictures of the children outside with their boomerangs.

On Wednesday, Mrs Wilson came in for French and we had the opportunity to taste a variety of foods from around the world. The children were offered banana and chocolate bread, cucumber, roasted butternut squash, pitta bread, lasagne, duck pancakes and both dark and white chocolate.

Impressively, Junior said, " I'm going to try everything!"

Courteney exclaimed, "I'm going to be brave and try the duck!" Afterwards she added, " I was really surprised because it tasted marvellous!"

All the children enjoyed tasting the different foods and would like to say a big thank you to Mrs Wilson for making it for them. Here are some pictures from the afternoon.

Also, a big thank you to all the year 6 staff and children for inviting us to watch the dress rehearsal for their End of Year Assembly, entitled Roots to Grow and Wings to Fly. It was very emotional watching the children performing all about the roots they have put down here at Westfield, which have given them the confidence to fly on to their chosen High School. It was a fantastic production and we would like to wish all the Year 6's good luck for the future.

A massive well done to ALL OF YEAR 5W who are our certificate winners this week. Mr Metcalfe gave it for making him glad to be %w's teacher.

This week Charlotteand Joshua received their GOLD wristbands and Tyler J received his PLATINUM wristband. As always, we are super impressed!

All that remains is for us to wish you a fantastic summer break and remind you that school begins again on Tuesday 2nd September.
