Friday 3rd October

Friday 3rd October

Welcome to Year 5W’s blog for this week.

Maths -  This week we have been tackling column addition and column subtraction. It hasn’t always been easy getting to grips with carrying and borrowing but we think we have finally got to grips with it! How impressive is that?

English - Our class novel is The Enchanted Wood by Enid Blyton and we have been looking at extracts form it this week. We have been writing our own description of a forest using two of our special SUPER SENTENCES. We have included both 2Ad and Simile Sentences. A 2Ad Sentence includes two adjectives .(describing words) For example…

The twisted, crooked tree was on the edge of the dense, dark forest.

In the dark, mysterious woods there was a calm, serene lake.

A Simile Sentence will have a simile inside it. A simile is when you compare one thing to another using the words like or as. For example,

The tree was as tall as a giant.

The branch was like a witch's fingers.

Topic - The children have begun to plan their own documentaries about the ALPS in school. Some of the children went filming in the ALPS earlier this week. Here are some pictures from their trip to the ALPS filming…

Others began to write scripts for their documentary and the remaining children have designed their opening and closing credits on the computer. We're really looking forward to seeing the finished documentaries in a few weeks time.

On Thursday, some of the children made a Fruits of the Forest cake using apples, pears, raspberries and blueberries, some of which have grown and been harvested from the school grounds. They are looking forward to tasting it today. Here is a photo of the finished cake. We're sure you'll agree it looks very tasty!

Our Certificate Winner this week is Nikola for quite simply being a pleasure to teach. Thank you Nikola. Well done from us all.

We hope you all have a fantastic weekend and look forward to seeing you again on Monday.
