All term Mr Grimshaw from Wigan music services has been teaching the year 3 children how to play African drums. The Djun Djun drums are the larger drums we usually associated with African drumming, dancing and chanting. The other drums are the conga, which has African and Cuban origins, and the Djembe drum. The name of the djembe drum comes from the saying "Anke dje, anke be" which translates to "everyone gather together in peace".
Mr Grimshaw taught the children by linking rythm with sentences. "Walk the big dog" and "Please can I have a can of coke" helped the children to remember and play the music.
