This week we held an Art Exhibition in school. We displayed the amazing still life artwork that we created.

This week we have been learning about Still Life art and have been using sketching pencils to draw different fruits and vegetables. Please see some examples of the excellent work we completed below.

Here we are in our Jubilee Crowns

In PE this week, we have been practising our sprinting skills. We started by warming up and then competed against each other in a 100m sprint.

In Maths this week, we have been exploring how to add fractions and mixed numbers with different denominators. We have found this challenging at times, but have worked hard to master this skill.

Adding Mixed Numbers

Some of us have been learning how to find equivalent fractions. We have used fraction walls and diagrams to help us.

During Music this week, we learnt how to play a piece of jazz music on the glockenspiel. The piece of music we performed was the Three Note Bossa, which is a famous jazz song that uses the notes G, A and B.

We learnt about the legacies the Ancient Greeks left behind this week. We discovered how significant their discoveries were and how they changed the way we live our life today.

This week we have learnt about the 12 Ancient Greek Olympian Gods. We investigated historical sources to identify different gods and goddesses using the clues provided.

It has been a day of celebration in 5W.

Sophia won the first ever History award for combining her entry for the Easter Egg competition with our topic on the Ancient Greeks.

Harrison was the proud winner of the Easter Egg competition!!

Happy Easter to all. Have a fantastic break.

In Science, we have been learning about states of matter. We pretended to be atoms and acted out being solids, liquids and gasses.

On our website we have uploaded some resources to help you support your child's learning in Maths.

These can be found under Key Information- Curriculum- Maths.

There is a link to the White Rose Hub parent's page and some workbooks that you can download to complete with your child.

In PSHE we learnt about collaboration through a team activity. We were all given 10 pieces of paper and 8 sticky notes and had to work together to build the tallest tower. We all worked really well, the teachers were so impressed.

Over the past few weeks we have been combining our gymnastic skills and creating a sequence of movements using the vaulting horse.

The White Rose Hub have launched a new app to help children develop their mental maths skills. It can be downloaded onto smartphones or tablets and is a fun way of helping children with their maths.

Below is the link to a page that will give you more information about the app and tell you where you can download it.

This week in Year 5, we have been using a vaulting horse to practise our gymnastic skills.

Just before Christmas the children at Westfield were asked to take part in a competition to design a Christmas card. The competition was won by Yasmin in 5W!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

This week we have started a new unit of work in PE. We are studying gymnastics. The children in both year 5 classes thoroughly enjoyed exploring different types of movement and learnt how to perform a stag leap and a split leap.

In Music, we have been listening to and appraising 'You Make Me Feel My Love' which was recorded by Bob Dylan in 1997 and Adele in 2012. The children then played the glockenspiel during certain parts of the song.

In Maths, some of the children have been learning to subtract 2 digit numbers using Base 10 equipment.

Oscar has been working hard this week. He has completed some counting activities and independently created a display piece for our Science board.

In PE the children created sequences of movements to traditional Viking music.

We were very proud of all the Westfield Football team for their fantastic achievement at the recent football tournament at Leigh Sports Village.

We were particularly proud of Leo who played in defence and Harrison who played in goal.
