Friday 19th April

Good morning and welcome to our first blog of the summer term. It has been a very busy with lots of special visitors in class this week.

Maths - This week the children have been learning how to multiply unit fractions by an integer as well as by non-unit fractions by an integer.

A unit fraction is when the numerator (top part of the fraction) has the value of one.

A non-unit fraction is when the numerator has a value of two or more. Click on the link below, which will take you to BBC Bitesize, for an explanation, activities and games about multiplying fractions by an integer...

English - This week the children have been learning two new types of sentences to use in their writing...

A 3 bad - (dash) question? sentence begins with three negative words, the easiest form of which is three negative adjectives. The first and second negative adjectives are followed by commas. The third is followed with a dash, then a question which relates to the negative adjectives:

Blood-thirsty, fearsome, powerful - where did the monster come from?

A 3__ed sentence begins with 3 related adjectives (each of which end in ed):

Frightened, terrified, exhausted, the princess ran for home.

On Tuesday, in RE, the children were learning how to say Shabbat Shalom in Hebrew. Ann Angel, who is from Menorah Synagogue in South Manchester, came to tell the children all about Shabbat and why Jewish  people celebrate it every week. Here are some photos from her afternoon in class...

On Wednesday, HH Kids came into class to talk to children about the dangers of smoking. They learned that cigarettes contain more than 4000 different chemicals! Also, they worked out that an average smoker spends £4599.00 every year on cigarettes! Both the children and the staff were shocked by these facts.

Our certificate winners this week are all of Year 5W for a fantastic and settled first week back. 5W have been engaged, eager to learn and stood out for all the right reasons to multiple visitors we have had in class this week. Well done to everyone. smileysmileysmiley

Next week, on Monday 22nd April it will be World Earth Day. School has had a visitor from Wigan Council in today to encourage everyone to make a promise on what they can do to help our planet. Click on the link to explore the World Earth Day website...

That's all for this week. We hope you have a great weekend and will see you again on Monday.
