Friday 22nd March

Friday 22nd March

Welcome back to this week’s blog from Year 5F. It has been another busy week.

Maths – This week we have continued investigating fractions. The children begun the week looking at number sequences containing mixed numbers. For example…

1, 1¼, 1½, __, __, 2¼, 2½

After that, they moved on to converting fractions into their lowest form. They had to look at both the numerator and denominator and find a common factor that they could both be divided by.

For example…

24/30 both parts of the fraction can be divided by 2,3 and 6. We look for the highest factor (which is 6) and divide both the numerator and denominator by it which gives these answers

24÷6=4

30÷6=5

Therefore, 4/5 is how we write 24/30 in its lowest form.

This website lets you simplify fractions, then play penalty shootout if you get the answer correct…

English – This week the children have drafted, edited and written their final portal story. As well as this, the children have been identifying the present tense verbs in sentences and then changing them into the past tense.

Topic – The children have continued their new topic all about mountains. They thought about being an eco-tourist and how humans have affected mountainous regions when they have visited. They considered what they could do to help look after our mountains. After that, they read about some endangered species that live in various mountain ranges around the world. They learned about mountain lions (also known as cougars), snow leopards, chinchillas and the red panda.

On Thursday, Year 5 were invited to Shevington High School to watch a performance of ‘The Punctuation Show’. This action-packed, interactive show lasted for an hour and the children were enthralled form start to finish. They sang songs, joined in with raps, copied all the actions and answered questions during the quiz sections. As they left, they were all given a pen as a reminder of the show and what they had learned about how to use punctuation in their writing.
