Hello and welcome back to the Year Four Blog.  You know, it's the place to be.surprise

In English this week we have been looking at different parts of sentences.  So, we were looking at the `main clause' and `subordinate clause'.  We also were thinking about conjunctions.  The main clause in a sentence is the part which makes sense when said or read on its own.  The subordinate clause is the part that doesn't make sense when said or read on its own.  So for example -

As I wandered through the trees, the birds cawed and the frogs croaked.

The two parts of this sentence are -

As I wandered through the trees

and

the birds cawed and the frogs croaked.

If you read both -which one makes sense?  Which one doesn't make sense?

The one that makes sense -The birds cawed and the frogs croaked is the main clause.

The one that doesn't -As I wandered through the trees -is the subordinate clause.

Can you identify the main and subordinate clauses in the sentences below?

When I was a child, I used to play on my bike every day.

We played on the field today because the sun was shining.

Although I'd hurt my leg, I took part in the football match.

Before I go to bed, I always brush my teeth.

In maths this week we have been looking at rounding. Not only rounding to the nearest 10 but to the nearest 100 and even 1000.

As it is quite a tricky concept we used the Rounding Rap to help us with our work.

Take a look at the rap here...it's quite catchy don't you think?

This is a great video for helping students learn to round.
