Friday 6th March

Friday 6th March 2020

Welcome to this week’s blog from Year 5F, as always it has been a busy week.

Maths – This week the children have continued investigating fractions. They have been learning about improper fractions and mixed numbers and how convert between one and the other. An improper fraction is a fraction with a numerator that is bigger than the denominator. For example…

5/3 or 10/4 or 27/5 or 15/2

A mixed number is a whole number and a part of a number together. For example…

1 and 2/3 or 5 and 5/6 or 2 and 7/8 or 7 and 1/5

This website explains what mixed numbers and improper fractions are in more detail and shows you how to convert between each of them.

English – This week we have continued our class novel The Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjali Q Raúf. The children are now desperate to find out what happens to the young refugee boy Ahmet. Will the queen help the children? Will the government extend the deadline so that Ahmet’s parents can come into our country? Will his missing parents be found and reunited with their son Ahmet?

Also, they have been investigating Greek myths. They have completed their cold task to write a description of a warrior battling against a fire-breathing dragon. They have started to look at different mythological creatures and some of their features.

Topic – In Geography, the children produced a piece of 3-D artwork using layers of coloured card. They have either chosen warm colours or cold colours. The artwork looks amazing and the children are proud of their work.

Science – The children were given a variety of different materials to explore in a ‘feely’ tray. They had to think of words that could describe each material, like hard, smooth, shiny, absorbent… After that, they had to match up words to describe the properties of each material.

Our certificate winner for this week is Freya. She won for fighting back at fractions. When the going got tough, she got tougher! yesyesyes Congratulations from everyone in Year 5.

All that remains to say is have a fabulous weekend. We will see you again on Monday.
