Hello and welcome back to this weeks class blog. This is our second week using the lovely text Snail and the Whale as the focus for our learning. Let's have a look at some of the lovely invitations to learn that we have explored this week
We took our writing activity outside this week in the lovely sunshine. We wrote a message in a bottle and then threw them into the water. We even had a reply to our messages
Here we are exploring the types of messages we would write and send to the snail or the whale
We looked at lots of different words and sorted them into trash and treasure words. We used some of our RWI strategies to help us sort words into nonsense and real words. Here we are sorting, reading and categorising treasure words
We also created lists sharing how to make a paper whale. We tested them in water and created lists documenting what and how to make them so we could share them with our friends in the other Reception class
The story of the Snail and the Whale has allowed us to develop so many different creative skills this week. We have explored mixing colours and exploring clay to make snails and whale 3d models. Here we are exploring clay and colours
We have been fine tuning our observational skills this week as we take on the role of letter detective. We have been using an extract of the text from the Snail and the Whale and been searching for different letter sounds. We have been encouraging the children to scan the text, identify sounds and highlight them when they have found them. This is a great idea for helping children to tune into letters
Have a go at home using a magazine or a newspaper - I would love to see examples of this
We have also been innovating the text Snail and the whale. We have spent time thinking about a new title for the story and a new character and discussing where they could go on their next adventure. Here are some of the wonderful ideas we have had. Amazing aren't they?
Remember our trip to Kenyon Hall Farm? Well take a look at this lovely sunflower that someone has lovingly grown and nurtured from a tiny seed. Perfect. Has anyone else's sunflower grown? If so send me a picture via Weduc I would love to see it
Next week we will use the text The Smartest Giant in Town as the focus for our learning. Please click the link below to listen to the story in advance of Monday
