week ending 15th March

Welcome to this weeks blog. There has been a lot going on this week. The main event this week was the trip to Kenyon Hall Farm. We had a lovely time and learned lots of new things about vegetables, growing and the farm.

A very exciting part of the trip was the bus ride. Everyone really enjoyed the journey.

When we arrived at the farm we met a lady called Helen. She took us into a farm classroom and told us lots about the different vegetables that grow on the farm. She taught us about different root vegetables like carrots and potatoes and vegetables that grow on plants, like broccoli and rhubarb. She showed us the vegetables, told us about them and asked us lots of questions. She said we were brilliant! She loved how we listened and followed her instructions. She said we had wonderful manners and we were one of the best reception classes she had ever worked with!!!

After that, we got to plant a sunflower seed. We were all given a pot, we had to fill it with soil then make a little hole and put a sunflower seed in it then cover it over. Helen told us to water it every 2 or 3 days but don't put too much water on it and put it on a window ledge to get some light. Hopefully in the summer we will have beautiful sunflowers.

After planting our seeds we went on a walk around the farm, Helen told us all about fruit and vegetables they grow. They grow lots of strawberries, blackberries and tayberries!!!

She showed us some apple and pear trees that were starting to wake up after the winter and had some buds on them. It was a lovely walk even though it was a bit windy and rainy.

After all that activity we were very hungry and ready for our picnic lunch. We all sat together and enjoyed our food.

Another lovely treat we had this week was Mrs Shirley came to work with us again and we had a great music lesson.

Our text of the week has been - A Superhero like you! It looks at all the people around us that help us like doctor's, police officers, fire fighters etc. We have written about a hero we chose and what they do to help us, eg. a doctor makes us feel better. We have also thought about our own super powers eg. being a good friend, kindness, being helpful etc. We have talked about our farm trip and looked at photographs to help us remember and written about what we liked about the trip.

In Maths we have been looking at the composition of number 7. We have looked at all the ways we can make 7, used counters and sang a rhyme '7 little ducks went swimming one day' and different numbers of ducks came back and some stayed over the hills eg. 2 ducks came back and 5 stayed over the hill 2+5=7. We have been recording the different ways we can make 7.

We've also had lots to do in our classroom. Some activities have been about people who help us and some have been about vegetables and the farm.

Next week we will be spending time learning about Spring and the seasons.

Have a lovely weekend.
