Week ending 1st March

We've had a lovely first week of this new half term. We started our topic on growing with the text 'Oliver's Vegetables'. We have had lots of activities this week based on lots of different vegetables. In Literacy we started the week by doing 'mind maps' to record what we know about vegetables and healthy eating.  We also completed an activity were we drew and described some of the vegetables we could look at in class. We wrote list of vegetables we could think of and used our Read Write Inc knowledge to spell the words.

In Maths we have been practising our counting and we've been looking at how numbers are made up of other numbers eg. 6 is made of 5 and 1 more or 8 is made of 5 and 3 more. We've been looking at 3D shapes and how we can see 2D shapes in them eg. a cube is made of 6 squares, a cuboid is made of squares and rectangles. We have been looking at shapes in the environment and spotting them in photographs of real things.

In provision we have had a fruit and vegetable shop with real money. We have looked at the price and counted coins to match and pay for the food.

We have been very lucky this week, Mrs Shirley came to work with us. She taught us new songs, we followed rhythms and we played musical instruments. We really enjoyed our music lesson.

The role play house has been changed into a 'Doctor's Surgery'. We've got lots of future doctor's and nurses. We've had bandages, pretend medicines and creams to help treat our patients. We've got a computer to put the doctor's information in and a diary to write appointments. It's been very busy in the doctor's this week, just like real life!!

We've been very busy with lots of activities around the classroom, as we have been learning about growing vegetables we've had soil in the sand tray with plant pots and trowels, we've been making vegetables with play dough, we've had lots of art activities drawing and collaging vegetables. We've used the construction blocks and toy fruit and vegetables to make vegetable gardens. It's been a great week!

We looked at the work of an artist called Arcimboldo who made pictures of faces using fruit and vegetables and we made our own face pictures using real vegetables.

As the story this week was about growing vegetables we are going to have a go at growing some of our own. We have planted some seeds in pots and we will see how they do.

To continue our topic of growing, next week we will be looking at the story 'The Growing Story' by Ruth Krauss. If you would like to look at it click the link below.

Have a lovely weekend.
