9th January

Happy 2026 everybody!

This half term we are reading traditional tales.  These are stories that have been in society for many, many years.

This week we have been reading and learning about the story 'The Gingerbread Man'

In Literacy, we created a story map, wrote an ingredient list for making gingerbread men and innovated the story using our own ideas of what character we would write about if we were the author of the story

Lucy ' A gingerbread banana!'

Finley 'A gingerbread demogorgan'

Logan 'Gingerbread Spiderman'

Presley-Rae 'A gingerbread princess'

The children drew a picture and labelled their ideas.

They had to use their phonic knowledge and had support from the RWI sound mat to write words like 'flour', 'treacle', 'sugar' and butter for their ingredient list

In Maths we have been subitising upto number 5.  This means we cannot count the spots we see, we just have to 'say what we see'!

Here, Jack Hartmann shows us what to do.  We loved listening and dancing to his song!

Subitize Up to 5 (soo-bi-tize) | Math Song For Kids | Jack Hartmann

Subitize is the ability to tell the number of objects in a set, quickly, without counting. In this subitizing song name the numbers in each set of dots, ten frames and fingers. Subitizing develops math fluency, when students recognize sets without having to count each object and it helps develop number sense and the ability to perform mental math.

We have also enjoyed activities linked to the Gingerbread man in the continuous provision

Our dojo winner this week is Marlie- this is her birthday week as well!  Well done Marlie.

Our Star of the Week is Theo.  He has made an excellent start to the new year!

Next week, we will be reading the story 'Jack and the Beanstalk'

You can watch it here to prepare for next week's learning.

Jack and The Bean Stalk | Fairy Tales | Gigglebox

Jack and his mother are so poor that they don't have anything to eat. Their hope is fading, until Jack meets a strange old man with a handful of magic beans.

We will see you all on Monday
