What a week!! This week we have been raising funds for our Year 6 residential next year. We held a Bake Sale and sold loom bands to help us raise money. We were overwhelmed by how many of you supported us and all our cakes and loom bands were sold out by Thursday lunchtime!

This week Year 5 visited Beeston Castle. We had an amazing day. We learnt about medieval castles and how to become a knight. We visited an Anglo-Saxon roundhouse, had lunch in the sunshine and scaled a huge hill to see the different parts of the castle. When we got to the top the views were breath-taking. In English, we have a new model text called Kidnapped. It is an adventure story about a young girl who is kidnapped but is rescued by a brave young boy.

This week Westfield took part in National Numeracy Day. The theme for this year was money. The children took part in an interactive online assembly during which they had to make choices when planning for a picnic. Throughout the day Year 5 completed money based activities and completed a Number Heroes poster showing how they will use numbers when they grow up.

Today the children from Year 5F were invited to Deans Trust to take part in a PE lesson. They worked in teams and learnt how to sprint and the best techniques to use when competing in a relay race.

This week year 5 were visited by Joanne from HH Kids to learn all about the dangers of smoking. We found out that cigarettes contain more than 4000 chemicals.
We discovered that smoking can damage different parts of your body.
Did you know that if you smoke 20 cigarettes a day it will cost:-

1 month- £390.60

This week Year 5 were lucky enough to have staff from Wigan Athletic Community Trust come to talk to them about careers. Trafford, Leah and Craig explained their roles within the Trust and how working in football doesn't just involve being a player. They described all the different jobs that are available when working in sport.

This week Year 5F used the VR headsets to visit different holiday destinations around the world. We used the VR headsets to generate exciting vocabulary, which we then used to create a diary entry.
In Maths this week, we have been focusing on formal methods of multiplication. Some of us have explored short multiplication (multiplying by 1 digit) and long multiplication (multiplying by more than 1 digit.

As part of our Earth and Space topic we learnt about the Geocentric and Heliocentric theories about the Solar System. Did you know that people initially believed that the Earth was in the centre of the Solar System (Geocentric) and that the other planets and the Sun orbited Earth? We now know that the Sun is at the centre of the Solar System (Heliocentric) and that the planets orbit the Sun.

This week the children experienced what is was like to be an astronaut. We took part in an interactive, online lesson organised by STEM called Spaceship Earth. The children helped to launch a rocket ship into space which collected space debris.

This week was Anti-Bullying week, our PSHE lesson focused on the theme of 'Choose Respect'. We thought about different scenarios and how we could behave respectfully. Some children acted out their scenarios for the rest of the class.
