Friday 10th January

Friday 10th January 2020

Happy New Year and welcome to our first blog of 2020! It has, as always, been a busy week here in Year 5F.

Maths – This week the children have recapped short multiplication and then moved onto long multiplication. They have began by multiplying a 2 digit number by a 2 digit number, then moved onto multiplying a 3 digit number by a 2 digit number and then finally a 4 digit number by a 2 digit number. Having rapid recall of multiplication facts was essential for this week’s work!

English – This week the children have worked on activities linked to their holiday read, The Jamie Drake Equation by Christopher Edge. They wrote a postcard from space to Jamie (as if they were Dad) describing what Earth and the Moon look like from the I.S.S (International Space Station).

Topic – The children have completed our Valhalla topic about the Vikings, learning about the Bayeux tapestry. They have also begun our new topic, called Mountain High, which will entail learning about mountains around the world.

Science – This week the children have begun their new topic all about Earth and Space. They found out that there are 9 planets in our Solar system and learned a mnemonic to remember all their names in sequence from the Sun.

My=Mercury

Very=Venus

Easy=Earth

Method=Mars

Just=Jupiter

Speeds =Saturn

Up=Uranus

Naming=Neptune

Planets=Pluto, which is now classified as a dwarf planet.

The children then went on to create their own mnemonics to help them remember the order of the planets from the Sun.

Here is our certificate winner for the week. She won for a truly outstanding week! We’ve seen a HUGE improvement in all areas, always trying her best, completing all work in the time given, reading at home every night and being an absolute delight!!. Congratulations from everyone in Year 5.

All that remains to say is have a fantastic weekend and we will see you again on Monday.
