Welcome to Year 5F’s blog for the week. As always, we have all been working extremely hard.
Maths – This week the children have begun to investigate decimal numbers. Firstly, the children learned about the decimal complements of the number one. For example, 0.37 + 0.63 = 1 or 0.46 + 0.54 = 1. After that, they were adding and subtracting numbers with different decimal places. For example, in the calculation 3.5 + 4.854 = 3.5 has one decimal place whereas 4.854 has three decimal places. When we put it into a column we ALWAYS line up the decimal points first. This helps us to place the numbers in their correct place. Also, if there are any empty spaces we fill them with a zero which acts as a place holder.
3.500 Then we can easily add up the two
4.854 + columns to get the answer 8.354
8.354

English – This week the children have continued with the myth Theseus and the Minotaur. They have written their imitation copy of the story. This is where they use the structure of the original story and just change one or two things in it. Also, they have explored another Greek myth called Bellerophon and the Chimera. They have completed a reading task based around the story, exploring the vocabulary they have read.
Topic – This week the children have continued their new topic about Ancient Greece. They have compared Great Britain and Greece today and produced a poster to show how different each country is from the other. Also, they have investigated what daily life was like in Ancient Greece and produced a fact-file.
Here is our certificate winner for this week. She won for blossoming in confidence. She has found her voice in Year 5 and is now realising her true potential.
All that remains is to wish you a great weekend. Fingers crossed the rain will finally take a break and allow the sun to shine. We look forward to seeing you again on Monday.
