Friday 16th September

Friday 16th September

Welcome to Year 5F’s blog for this week.

Maths – This week the children have continued looking at place value. We began the week by using the greater than and less than symbols. The children had to look carefully at each digit in a number and work out its value. Then they decided which number was the biggest. They remembered that the crocodile’s mouth ALWAYS eats the biggest number. After that, the children moved onto ordering numbers from largest to smallest. Finally, they have been investigating adding 10 more, 100 more, 1000 more and even 10 000 more than a given number. What a lot of maths we have covered this week!

Take a look at this website to investigate greater than and less than with your child at home…

English – The children have been using a thesaurus to find synonyms (words that mean the same as another). Also, they have been using a dictionary to help them find the definition (meaning) of a word. They then used this skill to help them when reading a tricky word in a text to clarify what it meant. Some of the children have been reading a story called The Firework Maker’s Daughter, whilst others have read Owl Babies. They then had to summarise the story, take out all the small unimportant details and just re-tell the main points of the story.

Topic – The children have been continued to our new topic called WOODLANDS AND WETLANDS. The children have started to plan making a documentary about our very own wooded area in the ALPS. They have watched clips from documentaries made by Sir David Attenborough to inspire them. They have been thinking about what equipment they might need and where they might want to film within our ALPS.

Science – In Science, have been investigating living things and their habitats. On Thursday, they went across to the ALPS to look for any different habitats that they could find. They were amazed at just how many different places there were. Here are some photographs from there time in the ALPS exploring…

Here is this week's CERTIFICATE WINNER who won for being an absolute delight to have in Year 5. She is always on task, engaged and contributes brilliantly in ALL lessons. A great start to Year 5! She also went on to win the UPPER PHASE PUPIL OF THE WEEK trophy which she gets to keep at home till next Friday. A massive well done to her from everyone in 5F.

All that remains to say is to have a fantastic weekend and we will see you back in school on Monday.
