Friday 19th January

Friday 19th January

Welcome to Y5F’s blog for this week! As always, it has been a jam-packed and busy week.

Maths – This week in Maths the children have continued with long multiplication. The children began by multiplying a 2 digit number by another 2 digit number. Then they moved on to multiplying a 3 digit number by a 2 digit number. Finally, they moved on to multiply a 4 digit number by a 2 digit number. How amazing is that?

Take a look at this website which helps to explain how to use long multiplication and then allows you to have a go step-by-step for yourself…

English – The children have spent the week writing their own Bedtime Story about a dragon. They began by writing a structured and guiding beginning explaining how they found a dragon’s egg in school. Next, using a model of writing to help them, they wrote the middle part of their story. This told the reader how the dragon had grown and was struggling to learn to fly. Finally, after much discussion about what might happen, the children wrote the ending independently. Their dragon was reunited with its family and flew off. Take a look at Maddison’s amazing story…

Topic –The children have continued their new topic EARTH AND SPACE. They have been learning about the eight planets in our solar system and the order that they are in from the sun. (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. *** Pluto has been down-sized and is now classed as a dwarf planet but the children used it to help them.) They have all created a mnemonic to help them remember the order of the planets. Take a look at some of their fabulous ideas…

Science – The children have been learning about spherical bodies – the earth, sun and moon. Also, they have been investigating the arguments about whether the earth is flat or spherical.

Here is our CERTIFICATE WINNER this week. He has won for being such a prolific reader who has now read all the books in our Big Cat reading scheme! He also went on to win the UPPER PHASE PUPIL OF| THE WEEK trophy. A massive well done from all of us in Year 5F. smileysmileysmiley

We would like to wish you all a fantastic weekend and we will see you again on Monday.
