# Friday 19th January 2018

Wow, what a week we've had here in Year 4!

We have started our new class reader -Polar Bear Explorers Club.  We can already tell it's going to be an amazing adventure.

Take a look at the blurb...

It sounded like a respectable and worthy enough death for an explorer – tumbling from an ice bridge to be impaled upon a mammoth tusk – but Stella really, really didn’t want that to happen, just the same.

Join Stella Starflake Pearl and her three fellow explorers as they trek across the snowy Icelands and come face-to-face with frost fairies, snow queens, outlaw hideouts, unicorns, pygmy dinosaurs and carnivorous cabbages . . .

When Stella and three other junior explorers get separated from their expedition can they cross the frozen wilderness and live to tell the tale?

What's not to get excited about?

Anyway, our teachers are planning a couple of weeks work around the book.  However, before we start, they thought it would be a great idea to get to know polar bears.  Now, you might think this is dangerous, but we're safe! Our teachers aren't bringing in any pet polar bears for us to meet.  No, we have been busy reading lots of information around polar bears.  And, we've got to say, they are amazing creatures.  For example -did you know -

• A polar bears sense of smell is 1000 times greater than that of a human
• They can smell a seal through 1 metre of sea ice as it swims in the sea below, or from 1 km away
• The largest polar bear recorded was 3.7 metre tall
• They can swim between ice for upto 3 hours.

Amazing eh?  Today (Friday) we have started to write our own non chronological report on polar bears.  We'll show you how we have got on next week.

In Maths, we have been busy checking our our mental calculation strategies for multiplication and division.  We looked at a whole range and style of question types.  We were really rather good at them -even if we say so ourselves.  Here's a really good online activity that you can choose the level of question, but also the catagory of question too.  Check it out -it's great. See you next time, bye for now.
