Friday 19th January

Hello and welcome back to 5W’s blog

Maths

We carried on working on multiplication this week; moving on to multiplying 2 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers.

23 x

                                                                        17

                                                                      161

                                                                    230

                                                                     391

We then moved on to multiplying larger numbers 3 and 4 digit numbers by a 2 digit number. It was really tricky! Knowing our tables was a big help so if we didn’t know them we struggled even more.

There are lots of times table games on the internet, but the ‘old fashioned way’ of chanting them (though boring) is the way to learn them.

Try level 2 of the game below for multiplication.

English

Well, at the start of the week and we were almost ready to write our dragon stories. However, first we practiced writing some descriptive sentences that we could use in our stories. Then Miss Power showed us some good examples of openings of bedtime stories. They included questions, eg; are you sitting comfortably? Do you believe in dragons? We then wrote the first part of our stories on Tuesday, part 2 on Wednesday and finishing it on Thursday.

Science

In science we looked at some evidence for two conflicting theories; is the Earth flat or Spherical. We read, discussed and sorted them. There was more evidence for the theory that the Earth is Spherical.

Topic

In topic we worked in groups to write all the things we knew about Earth and Space. We recorded them on big sheets of paper. At the end of the topic, hopefully we’ll be able to add some or correct some of our original thoughts.

Following this we learnt the order of the planets from the sun. To help us we learnt a mnemonic. A mnemonic is a where you use the letters from the beginning of words to make a rhyme to help you remember something.

My Very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming Planets

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. These are the 8 planets in order from the sun. The P stands for Pluto which, since 2006, has been down graded to a dwarf planet.

We had some fun then making our own mnemonics to remember the order.

Pupil of the Week is Leah Bibby;

For giving her all in everything she does - every single day! Her sheer determination has resulted in her great progress in Maths; being able to multiply a 4 digit number by a 2 digit number. Well done!

A massive well done to Ruby, Amber and Danika on gaining your

GOLD multiplication and division award!

Thoroughly deserved and will only aid you in your future lessons.

Hope you all have a good weekend. Stay safe and warm and well see you next week.
