Friday 19th October

Friday 19th October

Welcome to this week’s blog from Year 5F. It has been a busy first half term in Year 5! We are all ready for our half term break.

A big thank you to everyone who came to Parent’s Evening this week. It was really lovely to meet you all and tell you how your child has settled into Year 5 and life on the Upper Phase of school.

Maths – The children have continued to investigate column addition and subtraction. They have looked at how to use the bar model to help them solve addition and subtraction problems. The diagram below shows how we use a bar model…

The large bar will always contain the whole amount. The smaller bars underneath contain the parts that make the whole. If you have the smaller bars (parts) you add them together to make the bigger bar (whole). If you have the bigger bar (whole) and one of the smaller bars (part) you subtract the smaller bar (part) from the bigger bar (whole) to find the missing smaller bar (part). This website helps to explain this method a little further…

English – This week, the children have been planning and writing character descriptions for the other children who won a golden ticket. They have been thinking about what Augustus Gloop, Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde and Mike Teavee have in common.

Science – This week the children have learned about how seeds are dispersed (scattered). They discovered that there are four main ways to disperse seeds: -

  • Wind

  • Animal

  • Explosion

  • Water

Watch this video which shows you how this happens…

Topic – The children have created some artwork based on our trip to Martin Mere. They have sketched some of the wildfowl that we saw. Then, they chose their favourite sketch and produced a small watercolour painting. Finally, using this they produced an A4 sized watercolour painting as their final piece.

Here is our certificate winner this week. She won for just being delightful. She is polite, helpful and hard working. She is an absolute dream to teach. Well done from all of us!

All that remains to say is have a great half term and we will see you again on Monday 29th October.
