Friday 1st February

Friday 1st February

Welcome to this week’s blog from Year 5F. We have had quite an eventful week with the deluge of snow that arrived on Wednesday morning!

Maths – This week the children have been investigating the perimeter of shapes, including compound shapes and shapes with missing lengths. The perimeter is the distance all the way around the outside of a shape. We find the perimeter by adding up all the lengths.

This fun game allows you to calculate the perimeter of shapes…

English – This week the children have been learning the story of ‘Rags to Riches’ (a version of the Cinderella story) and re-telling it out loud, a paragraph at a time, using their story map to help. They have also been looking at sentence types to include in their story, such as 2Ad (sentences with two adjectives in them), N,WWW (a noun followed by a comma and then a who, which or where statement and Fr Ad (a sentence that starts with an adverbial phrase of place or time).

2Ad - Cinder was wearing an elegant, glittering dress when she met the handsome, charming Prince for the first time.

N,WWW – Cinder, who was a kind and caring girl, was despised by her step-mother and step-sister Stacey.

Fr Ad – Before the sun rose in the sky, Cinder woke to begin the long list of chores she had to complete every day.

Topic – The children have been learning about the Space Race between the USA and USSR to be the first to put a man on the moon. They ordered the Space Race events on a timeline and then researched the key figures, using the internet to produce a fact-file about each of them.

Next week, as part of our Topic lessons, the children are visiting Jodrell Bank on Wednesday 6th February. They are extremely excited now, as the date is very close now! Thank you for all the permission slips that have already been returned to school.

Here is our certificate winner this week. He won for striving to read at home every single night and blossoming into an independent learner in Year 5. Well done from everyone in Y5F. smileysmileysmiley

All that remains to say is have a great weekend and we will see you all again on Monday. Fingers crossed there is no more snow!
