Friday 1st July

Friday 1st July 2016

Welcome back to Year 5F’s blog for this week.

Maths – This week we have been looking at different aspects of number. The children have been investigating prime numbers, square numbers and factors. Did you know that a prime number is a number that can only be divided by 1 and the number itself? For example…3, 17 or 31. Square numbers are numbers multiplied by themselves like 3x3=9 so 9 is a square number. Factors are numbers that divide equally into another number. Most factors come in pairs…1 and 12, 2 and , 3 and 4 are all factors of the number 12. The children used MINECRAFT to help them investigate what cube numbers look like. Here are some pictures...

English – This week the children have been busy creating cue cards to help them perform their battle cries. Also, they have had the opportunity to practise reading out loud and some of them have even performed them in front of the class. All their work so far has been building up to their final performance, which will be filmed, of them in costume performing their battle cry to persuade their army to follow them into battle.

Take a look at some of their amazing speeches. There will be more to follow next week as we continue filming…

Science – This week the children have been learning about reversible and irreversible changes. For example, if you melt some chocolate it becomes a liquid. If you then cool it back down it becomes a solid again. So this is a REVERSIBLE change. Whereas, if you toast a slice of bread it has been burned and cannot return to its original state. Therefore, this would be an IRREVERSIBLE change.

Take a look at this website to experiment with reversible and irreversible changes...

Topic – The children have continued with our new topic called NEW ENGLAND about the Pilgrim Fathers. This week they have been looking at the countries that make up the continent of North America as well as the different states that make up the U.S.A. Did you know there 50 states altogether? How many do you think you can name?

Our certificate this week was awarded to Corey, Christopher H and Bobby for their sterling efforts in the Town Sports event on Thursday after school. Well done to all three of them – they made us all very proud.

All that remains to say we hope you have a weekend and we look forward to seeing you again on Monday.
