Friday 20th September

Friday 20th September 2019

Welcome to our blog for this week in school. We have been busy all week here in Year 5F.

Maths – This week the children have been learning about rounding whole numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1 000. They used a little rhyme to help them decide whether a number will round down…zero to four stay on the floor or round up…five to nine climb the vine.

Take a look at this game which allows you to practise rounding whole numbers…

English – This week the children have been given their own little creature to write a description of. They have called it a Loompa Woompa. Here are a selection of some of their fantastic sentences…

In the middle of their happy, friendly faces, they have googly, yellow eyes and on the top of their head they have two curved, stripy horns. (by Rebecca)

Regardless of their bizarre appearance, the Loompa Woompas are a hard-working, industrious lot. (by Grace)

When you see them, you will be mind-blown by their vivid, bright skin which is as green as an emerald. (by Samuel)

When they are not preoccupied in the factory, these chocolate loving creatures adore chocolate and enjoy letting sticky, gooey marshmallows melt on their syrupy tongues. (by Tamsin)

They can use their claws to rip open boxes of sugar for Mr Willy Wonka’s secret recipes. (by Alfie E)

Topic – The children have been looking at some of the features of a woodland. For example, they have been thinking about why the trees grow close together, what kinds of plant can grow in the shade and which animals might have a woodland habitat.

Science – The children have been investigating the different ways that seeds can be dispersed. Take a look at this short film from BBC Bitesize which explains in more detail…

Here is our certificate winner for the week. He won for leaving his teachers stunned with the amazing amount of maths work completed independently this week. Congratulations from everyone in Year 5. smileysmileysmiley

All that remains to say is have a fabulous weekend as the sun is supposed to be shining. We will see you again on Monday.
