Friday 21st January

Hello and welcome to our blog for the week. It has been another busy week in Year 6F.

English - This week the children have been investigating how to write instructions. They began by looking at the features they would expect to find in a set of instructions. Then they wrote instructions on how to make scrambled eggs on toast.

Next, the children were given the challenge to write a set of instructions to drive their teacher crazy.  Between them they came up with an extensive group of ideas ranging from whoopie cushions on the teacher's chair, plastic spiders in their cup of tea, chilli powder in cupcakes to ignoring everything the teacher says! They have planned, drafted and written their instructions up neatly in their books.

Maths - The children have continued investigating decimal numbers. They have been placing decimal numbers into the correct order (smallest to largest), converting a decimal number into a fraction as well as some reasoning questions involving decimals.

The White Rose Hub have just launched an app called 1-Minute Maths, which can be put onto mobile phones or tablets, for children to use at home. It is great for consolidating doubling and halving, number bonds and addition and subtraction. The link below will take you to their website, follow their instructions and let your child practise these key maths skills at home...

Topic - This week the children have been learning about being evacuated. Did you know that children were evacuated three times during the Second World War?

  • on September 1st 1939, two days before Britain officially declared war on Germany
  • in June 1940, at the start of The Battle of Britain
  • in September 1940, at the start of The Blitz

The children thought about what it must have been like being sent away from parents and family. What would they need to take with them? What would the host family they were being sent to be like? What would it be like to move from the city to the countryside? Would they be separated from their siblings? Would they be homesick?

Here is our certificate winner for this week. She won for her mature attitude, for being a friend to everyone and her dedication to ALWAYS improve her work and further her learning. She is a perfect member of Year 6F - already showing she is High School ready. smileysmileysmiley

All that remains is to wish you a restful weekend and we will see you on Monday.
