Friday 22nd October

Friday 22nd October 2021

Welcome to Y6F’s blog for this week. It has been a busy final week of this half term.

English – We have continued reading our class novel, Street Child by Berlie Doherty. So far, we have learned about the life of the main character Jim Jarvis. Sadly, his mother has died, the family have been thrown out onto the streets of London, and he has become separated from his two sisters. Unfortunately, Jim has been sent to the workhouse, where life is tough and cruel. Another boy there, named Tip, has befriended him and taken a beating from their cruel school master, Mr Barrack, in order to protect Jim.

Maths – The children have been learning about and then investigating calculations using BODMAS, which is the order in which you answer mixed operation calculations.

Brackets first

Order (any square or cube numbers)
Division
Multiplication
Addition
Subtraction

This online game is a quick, easy and fun way to practise BODMAS calculations at home…

Science – This week the children have been learning about two famous scientists, from both the past and today. Firstly, they learned about Ernesta Jonkute who has invented the blackest material in the world, which is known as Vantablack. This link will tell you a bit more about this amazing invention…

Then, they went on to learn about a scientist called Alhazen, who lived in 11th century. He was the first scientist to ever experiment to prove his theories. He discovered that light travels in a straight line and theorised about how we see things. This clip tells you a little more about this remarkable man…

Here is our certificate winner this week. He won for having a really ‘switched on’ week. He has stood out to THREE teachers and accumulated SEVEN Well Done Tokens in a week! Fantastic effort – keep it up!

All that remains to say is have a relaxing half term break. Stay safe and enjoy Halloween on 31st October. We will see you again on Monday 1st November.
