Friday 25th September
Welcome to 5W's blog for the week.
Maths
This week in maths we have continued to look at place value, that's what a digit is worth. We have moved onto rounding numbers towards the end of the week, rounding up or down to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10,000 and even rounding to the nearest 100, 000! Very tricky maths indeed!
English
Last week we read a story called Bling, well this week we have done lots of writing work around this story. As we didn't know the ending the children wrote their own endings to the story. We thought about all the possible endings and which one we thought would have the best moral. Year 5W came up with some excellent endings, most morals being that friendship is more important than any amount of gold!
Towards the end of the week we wrote our first book review of the year! We studied some book reviews and discussed what features a book review has. The class then planned their own review, edited it and then wrote up their own reviews which will be up in the classroom on display.
Topic
This week we have started looking at continents and oceans of the world. All children were confident in naming all 7 continents and all 5 oceans and could even locate them on a map! We started to write up some interesting facts about the continents and the oceans which will be continued on Monday afternoon. It was fascinating to hear some of the facts that the children found out.
See if you can match up the jigsaw and put the map back together!

Science
We have continued our study of plants this week in science. We discussed the meaning of the word 'germination' (when the seed cracks and the shoot grows out of the seed). We then thought about all the conditions a seed needs in order to germinate. 5W have planned and begun their own investigation into germination. In groups the children have two cups with soil and a seed in it, they are to change one thing. So some groups are giving one seed water and one without, some are giving one seed sunlight and one seed without and another group have given one seed heat and put the other one in the fridge without any heat!!! We will compare the two cups and seeds and find out the results of our experiment, so keep tuned!
Our certificate winner and trophy winner is Lilia, this is for being such a fantastic pupil in year 5W. She always tries her best and contributes to every single lesson. She is not afraid to try new things and put her hand up. Fantastic Lilia, you are a star!
We also have two new members of the school council, well done Lila and Jakub for accepting the role from Mrs Baker. You will both make great school council representatives and you should be very proud!
I hope you all have a lovely weekend with lots of rest and I will see you all on Monday morning!
