Friday 25th September

Friday 25th September

Welcome to Year 5W’s blog for this week.

Maths – This week we have continued to look at place value, what a digit is worth in a number. Also, we have been rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1 000, 10 000, 100 000 and even up to the nearest 1 000 000! How clever is that?

Why not have a play of this fab online game to see how good you are at rounding numbers. You can choose whether to round to the nearest 10, 100 or 1 000.

English – Last week we told you about a boy called Billy who was facing a terrible dilemma. His precious, pet cat Goji had been turned into gold by sitting on a magical cushion given to him by a strange, elf-like creature called Chimichanga! The only way to get his cat back was by giving up the special cushion. However, by using it he had become the most popular boy in school, instead of the usual loser he was. Should he save his cat that he loved dearly or keep the cushion and his popularity? What a choice! We discussed what we might do in the same situation and then wrote our own endings to this fabulous story.

Topic – This week we have looked at the continents and oceans of the world. We have completed map work, learnt the continent song and completed an online jigsaw of the world. Can you complete the jigsaw at home?

Science – This week we have continued to look at plants. We discussed germination (when the seed cracks open and starts to send out a shoot). We asked the question what does a seed need to germinate? We decided it would need light, warmth, water and soil. After that, we set up an experiment to check if a seed really needs these things. In order to keep things fair we only changed one thing. So, some of us planted a seed with soil and another one without. Another group planted a seed with water and one without. Then, another planted a seed in a warm place and one in a cold place. Finally, the last group planted their seeds in a light place and the other in a dark place. We are going to watch all our seeds over the next two weeks and see which seeds germinate and which don’t. We have all made a prediction and we will check to see if we were correct.

Our Certificate Winner this week is Owen for always doing the right thing. You are a wonderful role model. A big well done to Owen from all the class. nonono

We hope you all have a fantastic weekend and look forward to seeing you again on Monday.
