Friday 26th January

Friday 26th January

Welcome to Y5F’s blog for this week! As always, it has been a jam-packed and busy week.

Maths – This week in Maths the children have begun to investigate short division using the ‘chunking’ method. This involves subtracting ‘chunks’ from a number repeatedly. The children use partial tables to help them to do this. (Multiplying by 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100)

Take a look at this website which helps to explain how to use the ‘chunking’ method in more detail…

Now, let’s look at Evie’s work to see how she has used partial tables and this method to help her with short division…

English – The children have been looking at alliteration, personification, similes and metaphors in poetry this week. Here is an explanation of what each one is…

The children have looked at a range of dragon poems and picked out all the poetic features. This was followed by exploring similes and writing some of their own. Next, they learned what a metaphor is and again wrote some of their own. Then, they began to build a word bank of their own using alliterative phrases, similes, metaphors and personification. The children were then introduced to a poem written especially for the class describing a dragon. They used this as a scaffold to write their own draft version of a poem. After that, they edited their poem and wrote up their final version and decorated it.

Topic –The children have continued their new topic EARTH AND SPACE. The children have used laptops, leaflets and books to research the solar system and produce their own fact file.

Science – The children had an amazing afternoon of Planet Pairing. This involved them pairing up with a partner and spending time together to swap facts they had been given on cards about the different planets and then ask each other questions. After a few minutes, they moved to another partner and repeated the process. Then again…and again until the time was up! In the following lesson, the children wrote up what they had done, what they had learnt and their favourite fact.

Here is our CERTIFICATE WINNER this week. She won for being much more ‘switched on’ this week and taking a more active and independent role in her learning. A big well done from us all.

Also, HUGE congratulations to Evie, Tyler and Anmol for achieving their GOLD wristbands for times tables this week. WE are all immensely proud of their magnificent achievement.

We would like to wish you all a fantastic weekend and we will see you again on Monday.
