Friday 28th February

Friday 28th February 2020

Welcome to this week’s blog from Year 5F, our first for this new half term.

Maths – This week the children have begun investigating fractions. They have been exploring equivalent fractions, fractions that are of the same value. This fraction wall helps you to compare fractions…

For example…

1/2 is equal to 2/4 or 3/6 or 4/8…

2/3 is equal to 4/6 or 8/12 or 16/24…

This website allows you take a further look at equivalent fractions…

English – This week we have continued our class novel The Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjali Q Raúf. The children are totally engrossed in this moving story about a young refugee boy who is here all on his own, having lost the rest of his family.

Also, they have been investigating adding the suffixes ate, ise and ify to words. For example…

Décor becomes decorate

Material becomes materialise

Simple become simplify

Can you think of any other words ending with these suffixes?

Topic – In Geography, the children have planned their ideas ready to produce some 3-D artwork next week using layers of coloured card.

Science – The children have been investigating the phases of the moon. They have looked at how the moon appears to change shape in the night sky. This short clip explains the phases of the moon and shows you how to recreate it at home…

Here is our certificate winner for the week. She won for always being caring, kind and considerate towards all her classmates – she truly is a star, who twinkles in our classroom! Congratulations from everyone in Year 5. smileysmileysmiley

All that remains to say is have a wonderful weekend, we hope the rain takes a break for us all! We will see you again on Monday.
