Friday 4th December

Friday 4th December

Welcome back to Year 5F’s blog for the week.

Maths – We have continued to look at both the grid method, short multiplication method and long multiplication method for multiplying anything up to a 4 digit number by a 2 digit number. We have also had a big push on times table wristbands. Amazingly, the children have achieved nearly 20 wristbands over the past 2 days!

It would be greatly appreciated if you could help your child to practise the times table and division facts for the wristband they are currently working towards. Here’s a fab website link for helping…

English – The children have been looking at poetry all about dragons this week. They have collected some fabulous vocabulary which has been displayed in class for them to magpie from each other. As well, they have been looking at some of the devices poets use to make their poems interesting to read. For example, similes (comparing something as being like something else), metaphors (describing something as something else) and alliteration (using the same sounds at the beginning of words). The children have written some amazing poems. Can you work out whether these lines from Liam’s poem are a simile, a metaphor or alliteration?

For his back I’d use flames of fire…

His tail is longer than the River Nile…

His spikes are razors…

And his gold eyes shine bright…

Narrow like needles…

Scary as a devil…

Topic – The children have been investigating Viking runes. They have written their own secret message on a Viking rune stone. Also, they have written a Viking acrostic poem.

At the beginning of the week, the children painted their alien masks which they made out of gummed paper last week. Here are some photos of them painting them as well as some of them with their final mask…

In French, the children have been learning a Christmas carol. Interestingly, it is not in French! Each year group in school is learning the carol SILENT NIGHT in another language. Year 5 are learning it in Swedish, where Mrs Carlson comes from. It is called STILLA NATT in Swedish. If you click on the link it will take you to and animated sing-a-long version which the children have been using to help them learnt the song.

Our Certificate Winner this week is Joshua achieving his 2,5+10, 3+4, 6+9, 7+8 AND 11+12 times table bands in ONE day!! A true multiplication maestro. He also went on to win the Upper Phase trophy for this week. What a superstar!

From Mrs Roche’s class Owen was selected as the winner of her certificate for showing great enthusiasm in English and sharing lots of imaginative descriptions when writing a dragon poem.

So, as you can see it has been another jam-packed week here in Year 5. All that remains to say is to have a fantastic weekend and we will see you back in school on Monday.
