Friday 4th July

Friday 4th July

Hello and welcome back to another busy week in Year 5W.

Highlights from the week include…

Numeracy – This week we have been playing maths games that involve adding and subtracting. Also, we have been looking at place value problems. For example, how many tens, hundreds or thousands there are in a number.

Literacy – This week we have continued our work on the poem The Highwayman by Alfred Noyse. Finally, on Monday, we found out how the poem ends! And what an ending it was! We couldn’t believe that Bess died last week in order to save her love, the Highwayman. Then, even more dramatically, he rode back to avenge his beautiful Bess, and was shot down by King George’s men! We have all been on the edge of our seats reading this spell-binding poem. We have now completed our Highwayman booklets which include a comic strip version of the story, an imagined dialogue between Bess and the Highwayman, looking at what the similes and metaphors in the poem mean and a review of the poem. As well that, there are some fantastic illustrations to accompany all the writing.

CFL – This week we have continued our new topic called What’s it like Down Under? We found out some fascinating facts about the Great Barrier Reef. For example, did you know that it stretches approximately 2000km along the North Eastern coast of Australia? Also, amazingly it is home to over 1500 species of tropical fish! Furthermore, a barrier reef, such as the Great Barrier Reef, grows some distance from the shore before coming close to the surface. A lagoon separates the barrier reef from the shore.

As always we hope you all have a fantastic weekend. Let’s hope that the sun makes a welcome return soon!
