Welcome back to the Year 4 blog.  It's the place to be.

We've had a great time in Maths this week.  We have been busy learning the `Rounding Rap', and this has helped us round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.  We have been given numbers -to begin with -like 37, 82 and 65.  Then we were asked to round these numbers to the nearest 10.  The way our teachers showed us to do this was like this;

1) Circle the tens digit

2) Underline the digit to the right

3) If the underlined digit was 0 to 4, the tens digit stayed the same

4) If the underlined digit was 5 to 9, we added one to the tens

5) Then, any digits to the right, turned to zero.

So, 37 became 40 because the 7 is between 5 and 9.

82 becomes 80 because the 2 is between 0 and 4

65 becomes 70 because 5 is between 5 and 9.

Now that seems like a lot of had work, and a little confusing wouldn't you say?  But not for us.  Because our teachers are great at finding the best way to explain tricky things, we learnt how to do this using the Rounding Rap.  Take a look below...we bet you need to watch it again and again. Before you know it you'll be singing it too.  Bye for now.

This is a great video for helping students learn to round.
