Friday 6th September

Friday 6th September 2019

Welcome to the very first blog of the year. We have had a fabulous first week together in Year 5F.

Maths – This week the children have been re-visiting place value. They have been reading and writing numbers up to one million, as both digits and written words! Also, they have been partitioning numbers into their different values. For example,

25,357= 20,000+5,000+300+50+7

Take a look at this website which will help with place value…

English – This week we have been completing follow up work on our class novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. The children have been thinking about what they know about Charlie and his family based on what they have read in Chapter 1. Here is what the children had to say...

  • Charlie and his family do not have much money because only Mr Bucket has a job (by Samuel)
  • His parents are kind because they often give up their meals to give to Charlie (by Tamsin)
  • Charlie is very unlucky because the Chocolate Factory is at the front of his house (by Gabriel)
  • Charlie is appreciative because he only gets one chocolate bar a year and never moans for more (by Jordanna)

Science – We have revised the parts of a plant and their functions (flower, stem, leaves and roots). After that, the children have learned that a flower has both male and female parts. They learned the names of all the parts and what their purpose is.

Topic – The children have begun their new topic Woodlands and Wetlands. They have completed a mind-map detailing everything they know already about a woodland and a wetland. Then, they thought about animals that might live in each habitat and how they had adapted to living there.

Here is our certificate winner for the week. He won for his outstanding start to Year 5. He has already shown us that he is hard-working, sensible and a great asset to the Upper Phase! Congratulations from everyone in Year 5. smileysmileysmiley

All that remains to say is have a fabulous weekend and we will see you again on Monday.
