Welcome back to Year 5F’s blog for this final half term we will have together. We can’t believe how quickly the year has flown by!

Maths – This week the children have been looking at the relationship beween fractions, decimals and percentages. They have discovered that

½ is equal to 0.5 and 50%

¼ is equal to 0.25 and 25%

¾ is equal to 0.75 and 75%

Thay went on to look at the relationship between 1/10 and 0.1 and 10%. Take a look at this website which helps to explain a little more…

English – This week the children have finished reading our class novel Bill’s New Frock by Anne Fine. The book tells the story of Bill who one day wakes up to find that he is now a girl. Life is much different for Bill as a girl than as a boy. The book explores how society views boys and girls differently and has very different expectations of each gender.

The children tried to imagine what life must have been like for Bill. They thought about how they might feel about it, howe they might have reacted to the situation if it had been them. They used all this to help them to write a diary entry as Bill on the day he woke up to find his whole world was very, very different.

Also, this week the children have been working on laptops to complete both Maths and English assessments. They have concentrated really well and worked really hard.

Topic – The children have begun to look at our new topic all about Ancient Greece. Using an atlas, they have located Greece on a map and looked at the countries that surround it. After that, they have been looking at what life is like in Greece today.

Science – The children have continued to complete work on out topic all about Forces. They have been doing science practically again this week conducting another experiment to help prove that we have air resistance.

Here is our certificate winner. He won it for his fabulous piece of independent writing in English this week. He wrote from the point of view of Bill, from our class novel Bill's New Frock by Anne Fine. He had to imagine how Bill was feeling when he woke up to discover he was a girl!

All that remains to say we hope you have a weekend and we look forward to seeing you again on Monday. Aldo, get ready for World Cup season as Russia start the tournament on Thursday with the opening match against Saudi Arabia at 4 pjm.
