week ending 10th November 2017

This week we have been busy learning all about the text The Snail and The Whale. We started the week of by reading the text, we are reminding the children that it doesn't matter if they are unable to read the words that it is a great story telling skill to be able to look at a picture and talk about it. We do this a lot in Reception.
We have also been busy looking at different ways we can sort things. For example, we sorted animals into those with legs and those without legs. This really made us think. We had such a great discussion about it and have been using the Internet and books to help us find out information.
In addition to this, we have been using the Internet to see if our thinking and predictions are actually correct. Using the Snail and the Whale story we created statements and checked whether they were true or not. This was a fantastic opportunity and we were able to help our understanding and learn lots of new and exciting pieces of information.
We have also been exploring media and materials. We have created snails and tried and tested which materials would be best to use to create the spiral shaped shell. This was great for problem solving and really helped us to think about the fact that sometimes we need to change our approach to a task.
We also have a new area in our classroom - our phonic table. This is where we encourage the children to use the skills and knowledge we have gained in Read Write Inc and develop their ability to join letter sounds together to be able to read a word. We have some really good words created independently. Please keep looking and trying at home. If you need any help or support please speak to a member of staff. Here we are in action using our phonic table.
We have also been learning about Remembrance Day and the meaning behind wearing a poppy. The children have really been interested in this and all of their thoughts, hard work and ideas have been used to create a display. Please take a minute to come inside and have a look. I'm sure you will be very impressed.
That's all for this week. We hope that you have a wonderful weekend. Wrap up warm and we will see you in class next week for a wonderful week of learning all about the Gruffalo.
