Y1F Blog

How time has flown this term!

Welcome back to our class blog. We're sorry we have not been able to update for a while because of teething issues on the new website, but we hope to help you catch up with what we have been getting up over the past few weeks.

Numeracy...

In Numeracy we have been doing lots of work on number. We have been adding, taking away and working out how to find the missing number in lots of different number sentences and this week we have even been trying our hand at some partitioning too! haven't we been busy bees?!

Literacy.

In Literacy we have been looking at The Very Hungry Caterpillar story. We decided to make our own version of the story  and acted it out. We had lots of fabulous characters including the very hungry unicorn, cat, pig and even peacock!

Science.

In Science we have been learning all about what plants need to grow. We carried out an investigation where we planted 4 pots of cress...1 with no water, 1 with no soil, 1 with no light and 1 with soil, water and light. We decided it would help us find out exactly what plants need to grow and guess what we found? All plants need water!!

CFL

In CFL we have been planting lots of different vegetables and salad on the ALPS and decided we could use the food we were growing to help make a delicious fruit salad, (although we did cheat a little and get some ingredients from the supermarket because they hadn't grown in time!) have a look at us planting seeds and making our fruit salad below...

Well, that's all for this half term, we can't believe we are starting our final half term in year 1 after the half term holidays!!

We hope you have a fantastic half term holidays and hope we will be back to our weekly updates again.

Thank for reading, lots of love from

Miss Galley, Mrs Turton, Mrs Manning,

Mrs Linsdell and all of Y1F x x x

smiley

 Welcome back!

We can't believe it is already the Summer term, how time is whizzing by in Year 1!

Although this week has only been a short one, we have packed lots of learning into it. In Numeracy we have been learning about doubling numbers. We remembered to double a number, we just add the same again and we used our fingers and towers of cubes to help us double lots of amounts.

In Literacy we have been reading 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'. We watched a clip, sequenced and even acted out the story before writing our own Very Hungry Caterpillar books - have a look at our Very Hungry Caterpillar display next time you're in our classroom!

In CFL our new topic is called 'Grow me , Eat me.' It is all about growing plants, fruit and vegetables and next week we will be going over to the ALPS to plant our own fruit and vegetables!

Our certificate winner this week is Braydon for being brave and volunteering to be the Very Hungry Caterpillar in our role play...we discovered he has a hidden talent!

Well, that's all for this week, Thank you for reading and we will see you again next week!

Lots of love from
Miss Galley, Mrs Turton, Mrs Manning,
Mrs Linsdell and all of Y1F x x x

Happy Easter!

Welcome back to our final blog of the term and boy have we been busy!

In Numeracy we have been super Easter problem solvers. We went on a maths trail outside to find some hidden Easter eggs, then when we found them we had to use all of our maths skills to help us solve the problems on them. We did some adding, taking away, counting, doubling and even estimating!

(Photos coming very soon!)

This week we also went on an Easter egg hunt to find lots of different eggs that the Easter bunny had lost. We had lots of fun finding them, and eating the treats inside!

In Literacy we practised giving and following instructions by making some delicious Easter nests and Easter cards, we can't wait to show them to you!

We also finished our castle sketches this week, come and have a look in our shared area to see our masterpieces!

Our certificate winner this week is Adam for his meticulously detailed sketch of a castle, well done Adam!!

Well, that's all for this week, we hope you have a lovely Easter holiday and get lots of eggs from the Easter bunny!

See you after the holidays on Wednesday 23rd April!

Love from Miss Galley, Mrs Turton, Mrs Manning
Mrs Linsdell and all of Y1F x x x

Can you guess what we've been doing this week?

In Numeracy we have been learning about measuring, we also learned how to estimate too...did you know an estimate is a good guess? We measured and estimated lots of things including how far we could throw a beanbag, how long some lines were...

and how heavy different things around our classroom were.
In Literacy we have continued looking at the story Jack and the Beanstalk. We decided we would like to make our own alternative ending to the story so on Thursday we acted out our endings in groups. We found out some of us are super actors!

In CFL we have been looking at the different parts of a castle and sketching them, we have some real artists in our class already and cant wait to sketch out a castle next week!

In Science we have been learning about reflective materials. We were given a challenge to make a dress for Cinderella so she could be seen in the dark. We investigated which material would be best to use and then stuck them on to Cinderella's dress.

Our certificate winner this week was KJ for being brave and sharing his ideas with the rest of the class...KJ has done some super learning this week so keep it up!!

Finally, don't forget it is the school disco tonight. We are so excited and can't wait to show off our dancing moves!

Well that's all for this week, thank you for reading and we will see you again next week for our final blog of the term.

Love from Miss Galley, Mrs Turton, Mrs Manning,
Mrs Linsdell and all of Y1F x x x

What clever clogs we are!

This week has been assessment week at school so we have spent a lot of the week showing our teachers how much we have progressed since we started year 1.

As well as working through assessments, we continued our work on fairy tales in Literacy. On Friday we did some independent writing about what we could see if we climbed to the top of Jack's beanstalk, and what we wrote blew the grown up's socks off! Miss Galley is so impressed with how fantastic our descriptive writing is becoming!

Our certificate winner this week is Dominik for working hard to make leaps of progress in year 1, well done Dominik...keep up the hard work!

Well, that's all for this week, don't forget it's parent's evening next Tuesday and Thursday, we can wait to update you on your child's progress so far in Year 1!

Thanks for reading and see you next week,

Love from Miss Galley, Mrs Turton, Mrs Manning,
Mrs Linsdell and all of Y1F x x x

We read all night it was the best book ever!!

Wow... another busy week has flown by in Y1F, but this week has been even more exciting and busy than usual.

Firstly the Life Caravan visited school and on Tuesday we had a chance to go inside and learn all about our amazing bodies and how to stay healthy.

On Thursday we celebrated World Book Day by not only dressing as our favourite story book characters,

but by performing our World Book Day assembly too! Thank you to all of the parents and carers who managed to come and see us...but if you didn't manage to, click here to see a video of our assembly.

We also had a story telling competition in each of our Read Write Inc groups. We chose a book and read it in our very best 'story tellers' voice and then chose a winner from each group.

Click here to see our Super-Star-Story-Teller winners reading their stories.

As if that wasn't already action packed enough, we ended our week by visiting Skipton Castle as part of our CFL topic 'Dungeons and Dragons'. We had a fantastic day learning all about the different parts of the castle, how they were built and who used to live there.

Click
here to see a slide show of all the photographs from our trip.

Well, that's all for this week, thanks for reading and we will see you again next week!

Lots of love from Miss Galley, Mrs Turton, Mrs Manning,
Mrs Linsdell and all of Y1F x x x

On your marks, get set...BAKE!

Welcome back to our final blog of the half term. This week is the week of the 'Great Westfield Bike Shed Bake-Off!' and what a lot of fun we have had! In Y1F we decided to make a ski slope cake in honour of the Winter Olympics in Sochi so on Wednesday we took turns in icing and decorating our cake...you may spot that some of the skiers and snowboarders are familiar!

Thank you to all the parents who helped us bake cakes at home and bring them in to sell, we had a fantastic day on Thursday buying (and more importantly eating) the cakes we had made!

AND...We won best class cake in the whole school!! Wow, Mary Berry would be proud!!

Now for some news about what we have been learning this week...

In Numeracy we have been data handling and collecting data about our favourite part of our fire fighter visit. Did you know we liked going in the fire engine most?! We showed our data in a tally chart and a block graph, then answered questions about what we had found out! We were really good at it too!!

We also worked on some really tricky logic problem solving. We were given 4 counters and had to find all of the different possible combinations we could order them in, it was very difficult but we found out some of us have very logical minds and found the way of solving it!

In Literacy we have been reading about Kakadu Jack. He is a sneaky parrot who steals fruit as his owner goes around the market to buy it. Some of the fruit sounded quite exotic so we decided we would like to try it for ourselves. Miss Galley bought some bananas, grapes, mangoes, figs and papayas for us to try out and we had lots of fun tasting them.

The story ends with some angry shop keepers marching towards Molly Mack and Kakadu Jack's house so we thought about what might happen next. On Thursday we acted out what we thought could happen and today we are going to do some independent writing about it too. Come and have a look at our Kakadu Jack display because it's full of our beautiful writing!

In CFL we have been building our own fire engine models. We worked in groups to think about what we wanted to include on them and here are our finished models...

Aren't they fantastic!!

Our certificate winner this week is Layton for his logical problem solving skills! Well done Layton!

Well, that's all for another very busy week and half term in Y1F! Thank you for reading and we will see you all back at school on Monday 24th February!

Lots of love from
Miss Galley, Mrs Turton, Mrs Manning,
Mrs Linsdell and all of Y1F x x x

We have had fire fighting fun this week!

As part of our CFL topic 'People and Places' we decided we wanted to find out about the local fire station. This week four fire officers came to visit us and tell us all about what they do. They brought a shiny, red fire engine with them too!

First of all we went outside to explore the fire engine, the fire officers, John and Simon, showed us the different parts of the fire engine and talked about how they put out fires.

We even got to go inside the fire engine to have a look too...

Then we went back inside to have a look at all of the safety clothes that firemen wear. John and Graham told us about why they wear each piece of clothing and answered the questions we had thought of last week.

What an exciting day!

Our Certificate winner this week was Matthew for having an enquiring mind - Matthew was so interested and enthusiastic about out fire officer visitors and asked loads of fantastic questions!

Well, that's all for this week, we can't wait to tell you about another exciting visit next week.

Thank you for reading

Love from Miss Galley, Mrs Turton, Mrs Manning,
Mrs Linsdell and all of Y1F x x x

What a good time,

we've been learning to rhyme!

Welcome back to our blog! We have been very busy this week learning all about poetry. We decided we would like to write our own poems that rhymed, just like our class poem 'Jump or Jiggle'. Here are some examples of our excellent ideas...

Snakes slide, hedgehogs hide. - Maddison

Zebras stomp, lions chomp - Mollie

Monkeys swing, birds sing - Tegan

Butterflies flap, alligators snap! - Reece

What amazing poets we are!!

In Numeracy we have been learning all about number bonds to 10. We learned a new song to help us remember them (to the tune of row, row, row your boat)...

9 and 1 are number bonds,
8 and 2 are friends,
7 and 3,
6 and 4,
5 and 5 are twins!

We them moved on to learning to add using a number line and are already pretty good at it. We played lots of games to help us with our new adding skills.

In Science we have been thinking about lots of different pleasant and unpleasant sounds. We found out some of use like sounds that others don't. Teigan loves the sound of a drum because it is loud, but Ruby thinks it is too loud and hurts her ears!

In CFL we have been thinking about what we would like to ask our special visitors, did you know we are having some real-life firemen visit us next Wednesday? (unless they have to go on an emergency call) We thought of lots of really interesting questions such as:

How do you keep safe in a fire?
How are fire engines made?
Why do you wear a helmet?

We can't wait to find out the answers next week!

Our certificate winner this week is Katie PJ for her super independent writing in Read Write Inc. Mrs Rose from Year 3 was really impressed with how fantastic Katie's ideas were so well done Katie!!

Well, that's all for another week, we can't wait to let you know how our exciting visit goes next week so watch this space!

Lots of love from Miss Galley, Mrs Turton, Mrs Manning,
Mrs Linsdell and all of Y1F x x x

We have been 'perfect at partitioning' this week.

Welcome back, we can't believe another week has flown by in Y1F! This week we have been learning all about partitioning in Numeracy. We learned it was all about finding how many tens and units are in a number. We practiced our new skills by picking numbers and using cubes and dienes equipment to split it into towers of 10 and units.

In Literacy we have been looking at lots of different types of poetry. We thought about what we liked best about each poem and listened carefully to whether it rhymed or not too. We focussed on poems about our senses and in Big writing we even wrote our own poem about our senses.

In Science we investigated how sounds were made. We explored lots of different instruments and sorted them into groups of whether they were banged, plucked, shaken or blown.

In CFL we used Google maps to help us plan the route of our local walk. We decided we would like to find out more about the fire station and so planned how we would get there and wrote our own directions to follow on the way.

Our certificate winner this week was Tyler for being a delight to teach and making all the teachers smile...well done Tyler!

Well, that's all for another week in year 1, thank you for reading and we will see you again next week!

Love from
Miss Galley, Mrs Turton, Mrs Manning,
Mrs Linsdell and all of Y1F x x x

Happy New Year!

Welcome back to our very first blog of 2014! We have started the year as we mean to go on and already had a busy week starting all of our new topics.

In Numeracy we have been learning about halving and doubling amounts and numbers. We found if we halve an amount we share it in to 2 groups that are the same amount. If we double we add another amount that is the same. We practiced halving and doubling amounts of counters and cubes and played lots of doubling number games.

In CFL we began our new topic called 'People and Places' which is all about our local area. We thought about what we already know about our local area and what we might like to find out. Her is the mind map of our ideas.

Our new topic in Science is all about hearing. We had lots of fun listening to mystery sounds and trying to identify what they might be!

Our certificate winner this week is Anmol for his enthusiasm towards his learning in school and at home. Well done Anmol!

It was Luke's birthday this week, it was also Mrs Manning's birthday too so HAPPY BIRTHDAY to both of you!

That's all for this week, we will see you next week to update you on our Year 1 adventures!

Lots of love from
Miss Galley, Mrs Turton, Mrs Manning,
Mrs Linsdell and all of Y1F x x x

Week ending 19th December

We wish you a merry Christmas!

Welcome to our final blog of the Autumn term...we can't believe how quickly our time in Year 1 has flown by so far.

This week we have been super busy with lots of Christmas activities. On Monday, it was our Christmas party. We spent the morning making party hats and party bags in preparation, then we partied the afternoon away with lots of dancing and games.

On Tuesday we went on our trip to acorn farm, you'll not  believe who we saw on our trip...Father Christmas!! We told him what we would like for Christmas and got a gift from him too. We met lots of different animals and even got to hold and stroke some too!

We spent the rest of our Christmas week making lots of Christmas surprises to bring home (we won't show any photo's of what we got up to because we don't want to spoil the surprise) We hope you like them!

Our certificate winner this week was All of Year 1 F for their outstanding behaviour on our trip to Acorn Farm - the adults were all so proud of them!

Well that's all for this blog, and this term in Y1!
All of the staff and children in Y1F hope you have a wonderful and safe Christmas and we will see you back on Tuesday 7th January ready and raring to go!

Thank you for reading and we will see you soon,

Lots of love from
Miss Galley, Mrs Turton, Mrs Manning
Mrs Linsdell and all of Y1F x x x

Week ending 6th December

We are super sentence kings and queens this week!

Welcome back to our blog, we can’t wait to tell you about the grown up, descriptive writing we have been doing this week.

In Literacy we have been learning about super sentences – we have been writing lots of different adjectives (remember…they’re describing words!) to make our descriptions more interesting and exciting. We ended the week by independently writing a description of a bug, scary, grizzly bear and we did a really fantastic job…Miss Galley is now walking around bare foot because we blew her socks off!

In Numeracy we have been learning about counting, but not just any old counting, counting in groups of 2s, 5s and 10s! We have been using counters and arrays to help us work out how many groups of 2 and 5 there are in each number. We thought it was much trickier than counting in 1s at first, but we are starting to get really good at it!

Week ending 29th November

We have had an art filled week this week!

Welcome back! This week we have spent our week cosy and warm back in our classroom, although we have still been just as busy as ever!

In Numeracy we have been 'perfect problem solvers' by solving lots of different word problems. We have been picking out the important information to help us solve each problem...we found the numbers were most important, then the words that help us find if we are adding or taking away to find the answer (like more, altogether, less and how many left)

In Literacy we have been writing our own recounts about our week in the ALPS. We thought about what we did and used pictures to help us remember the order of what happened throughout the week. We wrote our recounts independently too...how very grown up!

In CFL we have been learning about an artist called Andy Goldsworthy. We found out he is an artist who makes collages and sculptures using only natural materials and no glue! We decided to use some of the natural materials such as leaves, conkers and twigs that we collected in the ALPS to make some collages in the same style. Have a look at how great they are...

Our certificate winner this week was Luke for a huge improvement in his independent writing, we are all so proud of you!

Other special news this week is that it was Maddison's birthday so HAPPY BIRTHDAY! we hope you enjoyed your day!

Well, that's all for this week, we will see you again next week,

Lots of love from
Miss Galley, Mrs Turton, Mrs Manning, Mrs Linsdell
and all of Y1F x x x

Week ending 22nd November

We're going on a bear hunt, we're going to catch a big one!

Click here to see the photographs of the week.

Welcome back to our blog, what a busy week we have had! This week we have been out to the ALPS almost every day for our bear hunt themed week. We have had so much fun and can't wait to tell you about our adventures!

In Numeracy we have been learning about position and direction. We went to the ALPS and worked in pairs to direct each other from one side to the other whilst one of us was wearing a blindfold. We also went on a bear paw print hunt to find by following careful instructions about their position and we were really good at it!

In Literacy we have been continuing our work in instructions. On Thursday we went to the ALPS and build bear traps being very careful to give bossy clear instructions to the adults who were helping us, then on Friday we wrote our own independent set of instructions of how to trap a bear.

In Science we were finding out about whether materials were waterproof or not. It was raining in the ALPS a little so we decided the best way to investigate would be to build our own shelters, then wet them to see if the let the water through. (Miss Galley helped the investigation along a bit by tipping a watering can of water over our shelters too!) We found the shelter built by Mrs Turton's group made of tarpaulin was waterproof because that group stayed dry!

Click here to see the photographs of the week.

Our certificate winner this week was Tia for settling in to year 1 so well. You have fitted into our class perfectly Tia, well done.

That's all for this week, thank you for reading,
we're off for a nap after such a busy week!

Lots of love from Miss Galley, Mrs Turton, Mrs Manning,
Msr Linsdell and all of Y1F x x x

Click here to see the author, Michael Rosen, read his poem.

Week ending 15th November

Time flies when we're having fun!

This week in Numeracy we have been learning all about time! First we learned about the order of the days of the week, we learned a new song to help us remember them, ask us to sing it for you, we are sure you will be singing it all week just like us because it's so catchy!
We also learned how to tell the time and now know o'clock means the long minute hand is on 12 and the short hour hand tells us what o'clock it is! We have been telling Miss Galley each time we have seen o'clock on the classroom clock and got lots of well done tokens for this! Try challenging us at home to spot when the clock says o'clock!

In Read Write Inc we started our new groups this week. We got to meet our new teachers and go to our new learning spaces and are having lots of fun!

In Science we continued learning about materials and found different materials around the class to describe. We used words like shiny, dull, hard, soft, smooth and bumpy to describe our objects and we were really good at saying what they are made from too!

In CFL we went on a clue hunt to find some bear paw prints to get us ready for going on our real bear hunt next week in the ALPS. We found a secret message...Beware of the grizzly bear!

We are very excited  about spending the week in the ALPS next week. We can't wait to go on our own bear hunt and build lots of bear traps and shelters! Please remember to send our wellies and coats just in case it rains while we are on our adventure!

Our certificate winner this week was Brigita for being such a kind friend and guess what...Brigita won the KS1 trophy too! WOW!

Well, that's all for this week. Thank you for reading and we will see you again next week to tell you all about our bear hunting adventures!

Lots of love from
Miss Galley, Mrs Turton, Mrs Manning, Mrs Linsdell, Mrs Pennington
and all the children in Y1F x x x

Week ending 8th November

Welcome back!

After such a relaxing half term holiday we have been super busy and bossy this week, read on to find out why...

In Literacy this week we have been learning how to write instructions. We found out it was most important to make sure they are in the right order and that they are bossy to make sure they are followed. We had lots of fun instructing Miss galley how to make a jam sandwich. She did exactly what we said and we soon realised we have to make sure we are bossy and precise.

We also enjoyed eating them once they were made!

In Numeracy we have been learning all about measuring. We learned about measuring length and weight and had lots of fun finding things around the classroom to measure.

In CFL we began our new topic 'We're going on a bear hunt!' We though about what we would like to learn in our topic and decided we would like to go on our own bear hunt. We decided first we would need to learn what bears like to eat and how to make a trap so we could catch a bear. We are going to the ALPS in a week to see if we can build a trap to catch our own bear so watch this space!

Our certificate winner this week was Anmol for his fantastic improvement to his writing, you have made all the adults very proud Anmol so well done!

It was also Katie L's birthday this week. We had a lovely day celebrating with her so  HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Well that's all for this week, thank you for reading our blog and we can't wait to let you know about our adventures again next week!

Lots of love from
Miss Galley, Mrs Turton, Mrs Manning, Mrs Linsdell
and all of Y1F x x x

Week ending 25th October

Welcome to our final blog of the half term!

Doesn't time fly when you're having fun!

We began our week showing our teachers what fantastic progress we have made so far in year 1. We completed lots of assessment activities to show what we have learned in maths, reading, writing and science so far and we blew our teachers socks off!

In between all our hard work this week we managed to finish off our moving toy models and they were really great, have a look to see just how good they are...

On Friday we celebrated Halloween with a visit from Miss Galley's sister, Gertrude the witch! She came in to ask for our help to make a potion because just like Miss Galley, she is sometimes quite forgetful! She asked us to write her a potion to make her beautiful for Halloween and we had lots of fun thinking of all kinds of disgusting things we could throw in!

Our certificate this week goes to Ruby for being a compassionate friend, Ruby won the KS1 trophy too and gets to keep it over the holidays so well done Ruby!!

Well that's it for this week, we hope you have a spooky but safe Halloween and will see you back at school on Monday 4th November.

Thank you for reading and we will see you soon,

Love from Miss Galley, Mrs Turton, Mrs Manning, Mrs Linsdell
and all of Y1F x x x

Week ending 11th October

We are 'super speakers' in Y1F!

Welcome to another blog and another busy week! We have had speaking competitions, shape hunts and even had time for a class treat...but we'll tell you more about that later!

In Numeracy we have been learning all about 2D and 3D shapes this week. We started the week by recapping all we knew about 2D shapes and making our own 2D shape pictures. Can you guess what they are?

Then we were more adventurous and made some 3D shape models...

We even went on a shape hunt to see which shapes we could spot around school!

In Literacy we have continued reading about the Jolly Postman. We got a letter from him telling us he had broken his foot and couldn't deliver his letters next week, he needed our help so we had a think and decided we would write a letter back to let him know we would deliver his letters for him and guess what...we did it independently again! How grown up!!

In CFL we designed our own toys, we thought of some great ideas of how we could make a toy that moves and can't wait to make them next week! We will make sure we add some photos next week to show you our new toys.

Also this week we had the results of our 'Westfield Speaks' competition...everybody who entered our competition was fantastic and we are so proud of them, but even better...Livia and Dominik won...how exciting!

Our final news this week is super exciting...we got Jack to the top of our beanstalk and so won a class treat! We thought long and hard about what we would like to do for our treat and decided we wanted to go to the cinema. Miss Galley said as long as we worked super hard to make sure we got all our work done, we might be able to squeeze a treat in at the end of the week.
Unfortunately we couldn't go to the cinema, so we made our classroom into our very own cinema, complete with big screen, a great movie and even popcorn!

Well, that's all for this week, we hope you enjoyed reading about another exciting week and can't wait to show you our work again next week!

See you soon,

Lots of love from
Miss Galley, Mrs Turton, Mrs Manning
and all of Y1F x x x

Week ending 4th October

Welcome back to another exciting week in Year 1.

In Numeracy this week we have been learning all about number bonds to 10. We know they are a pair of numbers that always go together to make 10, a bit like best friends. We learned a song to help us remember them...ask us to sing it for you!
We also played a number bond challenge game, we chose a number card and had to remember the other number that makes 10. If we got it right we won the number card and then the first to 3 cards was the winner.

In CFL we have been exploring how toys move. We found toys move in lots of different ways and started to think about how we could make our own toys. Next week we will be starting to design and make our own moving toys...we're so excited!

In Literacy we started reading a new story called 'The Jolly Postman'. It's all about a postman who delivers letters and postcards to lots of different strange and wonderful fairy tale characters. We decided we would write our own postcard for the Jolly Postman to deliver and addressed it to the giant.
We decided that because we are such grown up year 1s, we would write our postcards independently and we absolutely blew Miss Galley's socks off!

Our certificate winner this week was Richard for being such a kind and helpful member of our class - well done Richard!

It was Abigail's birthday this week. We had a lovely day celebrating her birthday with her and she even got to sit on our nice comfy birthday cushion all day!

Well, that's it for this week, we hope
you enjoyed finding out about what we've been up to and will see you again next week!

Lots of love from
Miss Galley, Mrs Turton, Mrs Manning
and all of Y1F x x x

Week ending 20th September.

Phew...What a busy week!

Welcome back to our blog, this week has been especially busy so join us as we tell you all about it.

In Numeracy we have been learning all about finding 1 less and subtraction. We did lots of taking away using counters and number lines and even wrote some subtraction number sentences.

In Literacy this week we have been reading the story 'The Gruffalo'. We have had lots of fun acting out the story and pretending to be the different characters.

Then on Thursday we went over to the ALPS to build a Gruffalo trap to see if we could try to catch our own Gruffalo.

We made a chair to try to tempt the Gruffalo into the trap too.

When we go back to class we enjoyed hot chocolate and marshmallows whilst watching the Gruffalo story.
After school, Miss Galley and Mrs Turton went back to the ALPS to leave some cake to tempt the Gruffalo into the trap and guess what they saw...

We think our trap worked!!

Finally on Friday we wrote a recount about our adventures trying to trap the Gruffalo this week.

In PE we had a tennis coach from Robin Park visit us. We had lots of fun practising our tennis skills, some of us were really good at it too!

In Science we have continued learning about ourselves by thinking about our senses. We spent the afternoon smelling, tasting and touching lots of mystery objects and using our senses to try to guess what they were.

Well, that's almost it for this week, our certificate winner was Teigan J for her imaginative ideas when designing our Gruffalo trap, well done Teigan!

Thank you for reading and we will see you again next week,

Week ending 13th September.

Welcome back to our blog!

Join us as we tell you about another exciting week in Year 1...

In Numeracy we have been working on some 'amazing addition'. We began the week by adding 1 more or 10 more to a number using number lines, counters and even 100 squares to help us (We're already getting quite good at using them!)

Then we moved on to playing lots of addition games by rolling dice and adding counters for the numbers we rolled.

We even had a go at writing number sentences to show our answers.

In Literacy we continued our work on our book 'Not now Bernard' by writing Bernard a letter from his mum and dad to say sorry for letting him get gobbled up. We also did some acting to help us remember what had happened in the story and Miss Galley thinks we have some budding Hollywood stars in Y1F! In today's big writing session we wrote our own storyboards to show what happened in the story. All the adults are so pleased with our writing work so far!

In Science we were thinking about how people's bodies have differences such as eye colour, hair colour and the shapes of our noses. We decided to investigate just how many different eye colours we have in our class and so found out everybody's eye colour and made a pictogram to show our results.

In CFL we have been thinking about how we look too and how we could let other people know. We decided the best way would be to draw a picture of ourselves. Miss Galley told us it was called a 'self portrait' and showed us lots of different famous self portraits. We used mirrors and drew our own self portraits using the correct colours for our eyes and hair. Come and have a look at them on our CFL display next time you're in Y1F!

Our certificate winners this week are Dale for wowing the adults with his super self portrait and independent work and Matthew for his amazing acting skills playing Bernard's dad in our role play so well done boys!

Well, that's all for this week, we hope you enjoyed reading.

See you next week,

Week ending 6th September.

Welcome to our first blog of the year!

Although this is only our very first week in Year 1 we can't wait to tell you about all the things we have learned and the adventures we have had so keep reading to find out...

In Numeracy we have been counting objects and writing numbers to 20. We have played lots of counting games and completed lots of counting challenges in our maths area to help us become real math-magicians!

We counted cubes and counters and we put numbers in the correct order

And we even played number games outside!

In Literacy we started reading a book called 'Not now Bernard'.

It's about a little boy who finds a monster in the garden and gets eaten by it...and his mum and dad don't even notice! We decided we would have to rescue Bernard ourselves and so made a wanted poster to help track the monster down. We are going to keep reading 'Not now Bernard' next week so we will let you know what happens!

In Science we have been learning about the different parts of our body. We decided to take advantage of the warm weather and went outside armed with some chalk to draw around ourselves and label as many parts as we could think of. Miss Galley was surprised at just how much we already knew...how clever!

Now we are in Year 1 we go to our school celebration assembly every Friday. Each week the adults choose 2 children who have impressed them all week and they receive an achievement certificate and might even get the KS1 trophy!

This week our certificate winners are Livia for being so kind, helpful and hardworking, and all of Y1F for a truly outstanding week...and the trophy this week went to all of Year 1! We get to share the trophy for a week so see if you can spot it in our classroom!

We hope you have enjoyed finding out about our time in year 1 so far. We can't wait to tell you about all our adventures throughout the year so make sure you come back next week to find out about what we've been up to!

Thank you for reading and we will see you next week,
