Y2F Blog

Week ending 25th April.

Welcome back to Year 2F's blog! We hope you all had a fabulous and well deserved Easter holiday and didn't eat too many eggs!!!!!

Everybody in Year 2F has come back to school switched on and ready to learn!!!!

This week we have been exploring Position and Direction in Numeracy. We learnt how to use coordinates to find and position objects on different maps.

We also explored how to describe the position of objects using language such as 'to the right of', 'next to', 'below', 'above' and 'in between'.

In Literacy, we have been finding out all about Woodland Animals.
Did you know that there are 17 different types of bat in the UK?
The Pipistrelle bat is the smallest breed and is only 4cm long and weighs the same as 11 paper clips!!!!!

We discovered that owls cannot move their eyes but are able to swivel their heads almost 360 degrees!!! Also, did you know that not all owls hoot? In fact some owls screech, hiss, yap or EVEN snore!!!!

Our Certificate Winner:-
Jessica S- for working really hard on our woodland animals topic! Keep it up

Don't forget!!!!

Year 2 are visiting the Walker Art Gallery on Monday. Children need to come to school early and wear full school uniform.

Please bring packed lunches in a carrier bag labelled with your child's name.

Have a fabulous weekend!!!!!
Love from Mrs Woodcock and Year 2F

Welcome to Year 2F's blog- week ending 4th April

Here are the highlights from our week-

In Numeracy we have been learning about angles- we used angle eaters to help us discover if objects and shapes contained right angles. Here we are on the playground completing our angle hunt!

In CFL we finished painting our houses- ready to go to the alps! The children were really excited to take the finished houses to the ALPs. When we arrived at the ALPs the children assembled the houses and created a bucket line.
The fire started in the Bakery- and then spread throughout the houses! The children passed the 'buckets' from person to person in order to put the fire out!

Have a look at the video of London burning on the ALPS. Click here.

Big well done to all children who entered an egg for the competition- they were 'eggcellent!!!'

We hope you all have a great Easter and enjoy the holiday! We will see you back at school on Wednesday 23rd April

Love from Mrs Woodcock

Welcome to Year 2F blog- week ending 28th March

Our week started on Monday with a very interesting production of Maths- throughout History! We discovered how each historic period had a link to maths!

In our Numeracy lessons this week we looked at symmetry- and the children were really good at completing symmetrical patterns by using mirrors.

In CFL we continued our Great Fire of London topic by considering eyewitness accounts to inform us about the past. We looked at Samuel Pepys as he wrote a diary- which we also completed and on Friday the children wrote a newspaper article!

Our certificate winner- Henley Hilton- for showing a good understanding of symmetry.

A big well done to all the children who have already completed some fabulous work in their learning log- please complete your lesson missions and return to school by Thursday so the winner can be chosen!

Love from Mrs Woodcock

Welcome to Year 2F blog- week ending 21st March

Another busy has been had in Year 2!!! Check out our highlights below-

We started the week with a visit from Nikki from Knowsley Safari Park. She brought in the following animals a stick insect, a bearded dragon, cockroaches, a frog and a snake!
We were able to touch the animals and we learned about what they eat. Here are some photographs from her visit!

In Numeracy we have been working on some very tricky calculations this week. Some children have been solving missing number problems such as
14 + ? = 24
We now know that you need to use the inverse of addition to solve the problem!

However, some children have been introduced to Algebra and balancing equations!

We discovered that the = sign means the same as for example-
12 + 4 = 15 + ?
We worked these calculations out by first finding the answer to 12+ 4 = 16
Therefore the calculation to the right of the = sign must also equal 16!
YES we are only in Year 2!!!

In Literacy we started to look at newspaper articles. We first thought about some great headlines related to the Great fire of London- here are some of the most exciting headlines-
London's blazing inferno!
FIRE! FIRE!
Street's are burning!

We then started to look at the features of a newspaper. We used real newspapers and we started to cut them up and organized them under the headings
Headlines
Orientation
Photographs
Captions
Main body of text

Check out our photographs below-

Certificate Winner-
All of Year 2F for being super sensible, responsible and mature when some creepy, slithering, jumping visitors came into class.

Welcome to this week's blog- 14.3.14

Well what a busy and tricky week we have had in Year 2F! This week has been assesment week so the children have been REALLY BUSY completing some tricky Year 2 tests. BUT- the children have been so sensible and worked their socks off!!! We are so proud of them all and can't wait to tell you about their progress at Parent's evening.

In CFL- we have continued to learn about the Great Fire of London. We were introduced to King Charles II who, after the fire ensured that some very important changes happened.

The children talked about these changes and Jessica remembers that 'he started the fire brigade.'
Alexa remembers that 'he introduced houses to be made from bricks and to be built further apart.'

In Science we continued to look at our new topic 'Forces and Movement.' We started to look at different actions to decide whether we were exerting a push or a pull force.

Certificate winner-
Alexa Crompton- for simply being ALEXA! Amazing Listener Enjoys school eXceptional Attitude!!! So proud of her - and Alexa was chosen as pupil of the week!

Your child's parents evening slip has been sent home today (Friday) please check the time and I look forward to speaking to you on either Tuesday or Thursday

Hello and welcome to our blog- week ending 7th March

We had a fabulous week in school with lots of exciting activities- here are the highlights.

In Numeracy we started to partition numbers (which means thinking about the number in tens and units)

We were given numbers and we had to partition it-
78 = 70 + 8
65 = 60 + 5

Some children even managed to partition 3 digit numbers-
123= 100 + 20 + 3
345 = 300 + 40 + 5

In CFL we have started our fabulous and very interesting topic- Is London Burning? This topic is based on the The Great Fire of London and we are extremely interested in finding out all about it!

On Thursday it was World Book Day- we all enjoyed dressing up for the day as our favourite book characters. Here are some pictures below.

Our certificate Winner was Chloe Simpson- for showing excellent listening skills in music

Have a great weekend

Week Ending 14th February

In Numeracy, we have continued our work on Fractions. We have moved to finding fractions of number. We have worked hard to find 1/2, 1/4 and 3/4 of different amounts.

In CFL, we created a set of instructions to show 'How to make a Pizza', using time connectives and 'bossy' words. We also evaluated the whole 'Ready Steady Cook' topic and all stated how much we enjoyed each part of the topic.

On Wednesday, we visited St Mark's Church. We met Will, who helped us explore different parts of the church.

Thursday and Friday was our "Bake Off" Competition...all I can say is WOW...what a lot of greatly talented bakers we have as our parents. Thank you so very much for your time and effort it was truly appreciated.
More pics to follow... Have a lovely half term... Take care Love from Mrs Forsyth and all the staff in Year 2  x x

Week ending 7th Feb 2014

Hi everyone and thanks for reading our blog!

In Numeracy this week we have been learning about Fractions!!
We started by looking at 1/2, then 1/4 and even 3/4!!

In Literacy we planned and wrote our own version of the fairy tale story the three little pigs! The children could change the animals to anything they wanted and also the materials to make their houses! We had some excellent stories!

In CFL we finally made our pizzas! The children really enjoyed chopping, spreading and preparing their pizzas - photographs to follow!
We even learned about kitchen safety and good hygiene rules!

Week ending 31st January 2014!

Hello and welcome to Year 2F's weekly blog!

On Wednesday a theatre company came into school and we watched a super show- It was called The Countback Kid and yes you guessed it- it helped us in our numeracy work. We really enjoyed the show and it thought it was super!!!

In CFL we designed our own healthy pizza! Now this is something we are really excited about! We all selected the toppings that we think are healthy and tasty and next week we are going to make them! YUMMY!!!!

In Literacy we have been thinking of some super describing words to describe Horrid Henry and Perfect Peter. The children worked really hard completing their writing this week and really enjoyed talking about the behaviour and personality of these two different characters!

A big well done to David Kent on receiving our Certificate this week for mastering subtraction on an empty number line!!!

Enjoy the weekend- love from Mrs Woodcock xxx

We have been finding this difficult, however we have persevered and its starting to make a lot of sense!

In our CFL topic- Ready Steady Cook we received a letter from the Perfect Pizza Company. They need us to design a healthy, delicious and attractive looking pizza. So, we wrote a letter a Pizza Hut explaining to them that we are visiting them on Wednesday to taste a variety of pizza toppings. (Reminder- if you have not returned your slip for the trip please do so asap!)

In Science we continued to investigate a range of materials and sorted a range of materials into natural and man made.

Certificate Winner-
Daniel Komkovs- for making a BIG change in his attitude towards his work- he has been noticed by many teachers and has worked his socks off!
AND Daniel was chosen as pupil of the week! We are so proud of you Daniel- keep up the hard work!

Hello and welcome to Year 2F's first blog for 2014!

We hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and New Year and I think all of the children had a great break as they have all returned back to school refreshed and raring to go!!!!!

Our highlights of the week-

In literacy we started the week by looking at poems. We looked at tongue twisters- and they are quite difficult to say. After listening to Mrs Woodcock struggling to read them (only joking she was pretty good!!!) we worked in with a partner and decided which tongue twister we preferred the most.
Next we practiced reading the tongue twisters and some children performed their poem whilst being recorded-
to see the tongue twisters.

Maci-Lee and Henley's favourite tongue twister is
She sells sea-shells on the seashore

Cerys and Harvey's favourite tongue twister is-
Our Joe wants a banjo

Alexa, Jessica and Frank's favourite tongue twister is-
Shop chat

In Numeracy we started the week by looking at repeated addition. We realised that this meant adding the same number- for example- 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 =  and we used empty number lines to help us work out the answers.
Next we started to look at multiplication and learned that another word for it is-  'groups of'
We then were presented with an image and we had to 'say what we see'- or Catchphrase as Mrs Woodcock repeatedly called it!

In Science we have started a new topic called Grouping and changing materials.
We started the topic by creating a mind map and we remembered everything we were taught in Year 1.  After that we were given pictures of different materials and we had to decide if it is a natural or man made material.
Here are some photographs of us sorting through the materials.

Our certificate winner-
McKenzie Page- for staying calm during some tricky situations.

We hope you all have a great weekend love from Mrs Woodcock, Miss Morrison, Mrs Stubbs, Mrs Charnock and all of Year 2F xxx

Well hello again....
This week in Maths we have been solving word problems...these can be rather tricky. However following the RUCSAC method (Read, Understand, Calculate, Solve and Check) the children were successful

In Science  the children were predicting which circuits would work and which would not work.

Then the children created each circuit to test and see if their predictions were correct. Teachers were delighted to hear the scientific vocabulary that the children were using.

We have also been rehearsing our Good Work Assembly that we will show to all the other children on Middle Phase on Monday morning. What lovely clear speakers and good singers we have. Have a lovely weekend Love from Mrs Woodcock, x

 Week ending 29th November

Hello and welcome to our blog.

This week has been Assessment Week so we have had the chance to show our teachers how much progress we have made in Reading, Writing and Numeracy.

In Literacy we have been looking at fairytales and read the story of Cinderella. We have been working hard all week to create descriptions of the different characters.

On Tuesday we 'hot seated' characters from the story! We worked with a partner and thought of some questions and then we answered them like the character would! Here are some photographs.

We have also started some work on writing Super Sentences. This week we have been looking at 2A Sentences (which are sentences that contain 2 adjectives).

In Numeracy we have been using numberlines to help us find the answer to some tricky calculations.

In Science we made a working electrical circuit using bulbs, batteries and wires. Our teachers said we were all bright sparks!!!! We also learnt how to draw a circuit diagram using the correct symbols.

Here we are with the equipment trying to make the bulb light.

Our Certificate Winner this week is…..
Harvey Thompson- for astounding everyone in his writing and for thinking of 7 2A sentences!!!

We were given a report about Famous Pets and in groups we were able to cut it up in order to view the features of a report. We discovered that the features of a non-chronological report are-
*It has a title
*An introduction
*Sub-headings
*Pictures/images
*Writing (which we also learned is called text)
*AND can be read in any order!!

Here are our photographs of our group work-
